I don't know the tab, but here are the words and the chords. The verses
all have the same progression.
The Gambler:
F Bb F
On a warm summer's evening on a train bound for nowhere
Bb F C
I met up with a gambler. We were both too tired to sleep.
F Bb F
So we took turns a starin' out the window at the darkness
Bb F C7 F
till boredom overtook us and he began to speak.
He said, "Son, I've made a life out of readin' people's faces
and knowin' what their cards were by the way they held their eyes.
So if you don't mind my sayin' I can see you're out of aces;
for a taste of your whiskey I'll give you some advice."
So I handed him my bottle, and he drank doen my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet and his face lost all expression.
Said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy, you gotta learn to play it
right."
CHORUS:
F Bb F
"You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em.
Bb F C
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
F Bb F Bb F
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
Bb F C7 F
Ther'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done."
"Ev'ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away and knowin' what to keep.
'Cause ev'ry hand's a winner, and ev'ry hand's a loser.
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep."
And when he'd finished speakin' he turned back toward the window.
Crushed ou his cigarette and faded off to sleep.
And somewhere in the darkness the gambler he broke even.
But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep.
(to chorus:)
Well, there it is.

Walrus, I'd still have to bum rides off of people."

Is it just me or does country music like this pack in a lot more meaning than those 7-11 songs? By 7-11 songs I mean those that have seven words repeated eleven times per chorus with an average of three choruses, wherein said chorus can be borrowed by verses.

This song is a nice metaphor for the way life goes. Sometimes, you're dealt with a great hand, sometimes you're dealt with a crappy hand. It depends on how you work it and what you do with it. It's just one guy telling the other that trick to life. You need to work your cards just right and you got to do what you can. In life, you can't just assume you'll do well and you'll be great you got to wait until the dealing is done and see what happens.

I have held many long, heated discussions with my mother as to whether The Gambler dies at the end of the song. I say he does, she says not. I think it just makes sense. What else would "broke even" and "final words" refer to? And he already said that "the best you can hope for is to die in your sleep."

the old man dies at the end of the song in my opinion and i also agree that this song is about the life and how u deal with what comes to you, this is obviously being told by the older man. i also think that he dies happy in the knowledge that he has bestowed his wisdom to someone else for them to also pass on. "And in his final words I found an ace that I could keep." this seems like the old man's words have helped the singer and so he dies knowing he woz successful. great song.

Its about life, best you can hope for is to die in your sleep lets you know that he's singing about life, when he says the gambler broke even it means to me that dieing is breaking even, in the end everyone breaks even.

I would say that the gambler unquestionably dies at the end of the song. Earlier in the song, it states, "And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep." The "ace" is found in the gambler's "final words" after he "broke even." I would say that there is virtually no question that he died. Please feel free to disagree if you feel otherwise.

anyone want to discuss whether or not they think the Gambler dies at the end of the song "And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep... And somewhere in the darkness, the gambler he broke even. And in his final words I found an ace that I could keep. "

Only the extremely wise know when it's best to hold on versus when it's best to let go. Obviously, I think he's talking aobut moe than just a card game. The way I take it, it seems like the gambler is talking about relationships in life. Ultimately, you can only depend on yourself and you have to know what other relationships are healthy and which are not.

has any of you thorught it was about life and its saying that life is what you make it 'Cause every hand's a winner and every hand's a loser'. and i belive there saying not that the gambler dies but that you should leave the table once you have broken even insted of playing on more and u could lose it all.
