Cotton Crush - Kevine Devine feat. Jesse Lacey
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By: Alex (alex_d00d@hotmail.com)
this is an awsome song, and pretty simple too. Feel free to ask me a question or comment
Standard Tuning
Verse: "And the bricks get laid..."
e|----------------|
B|----------------|
G|--9-----8-------|
D|--9-----9----6--|
A|--7-----7----6--|
E|-------------4--|
alternate between the first two chords with plam muting and rhythm, and the last
chord is straight palm muting...listen to the song
Chorus:
E B
And then you'll be stoned in some park
C#m E
Just nodding your head and pinching your arm
F#m B
When a girl Walks alone, she's humming your song
C#m E
With your t-shirt on and that's when you're done
Pre Distorted Part: "That's when you're done that's when you're done part"
e|----------------|
B|----------------|
G|--9-----8----11-|
D|--9-----9----9--|
A|--7-----7----7--|
E|----------------|
You just alternate between these chords
Verse: "It was a cotton crush..."
same chords as the first verse but this time its distorted and no palm muting
CHorus:
E5 B5
The quiet can scrape all the calm from your bones,
C#5 E(ii)5
but maybe it should. Maybe we need to be hollowed
F#5 B5
to get up and grow, and stop fucking around,
C#5 E(ii)5
to kick off our braces and start straightening out.
E5
Let's sift through the static
B5
to find a simpler sound
C#5
Let's sift through the static
E(ii)5
to find a simpler sound...
F#5 (the rest repeates the chords from the chorus once more)
simpler sound than the shit that's clouding our heads now
Chords:
E: 022100
E5: 022xxx
E(ii)5: x799xx
F#m: 244222
F#5: 244xxx
B: x24442 or 799877
B5: x244xx or 799xxx
C#m: x46654
C#5: x466xx
the rest of the song is random chords in the key of E..i didnt bother getting them
cause i dont like the way the song ends :) but this song is really good other than that.

i'd say that if you're very lonely and don't have friends to talk to then seeing someone (and particularly a girl and perhaps an attractive girl at that) walk by with your t-shirt on while humming your song without knowing or caring who you are it would only heighten your loneliness and confusion. there are people walking down the street with your shirt on because they think you and your music are so great but you feel completely alone. i'd say that the south having lots of cotton fields (cotton being used to make fabric) and the north having excess thread (which can be used to sew pieces of fabric together) is just another in a long line of metaphors about the country being divided.

this song seems to be about songwriting / recording... He's sick of the (kind of) emo sound he's making. The girl in the park could be one of those like the hundreds of them who go to a green day concert waiting only for "boulevard of broken dreams" without knowing anything they did before .. He doesn't want to write emo songs about crying, diying, being sooo disapointed by life anymore.. So let's go back to the rock (the simpler sound).. ironicaly this song is so emo hehe.. ok this is only my opinion guys :)

This song is beautiful. Jesse's voice just tops it off. Such a great complement. But even if he wasn't there, the song would still be amazing.

i saw him yesterday at red bank rocks and asked what the cotton crush was. he just asked me what i thought. i told him it reminded me of the industrial revolution. hahaha. "i wish i could write something intellectual like that." so he didnt tell me. but i said i like the brick metaphor and he said "yeah, its about the cycles of everything" mmhm.

It's about the realization of things in general and how everything works. Every lyric has to do with the realization of something. "The bricks always get torn up again" Things are doomed to repeat themselves and people and things need to change. He goes on to talk about the realization that friends will not always be there for you and perhaps is trying to get the point across that you shouldn't rely on others, but rather yourself. "Then you'll be stoned." This part is interesting, I think he's referring to himself on this one and how he realized that people do look up to him (or people in bands in general, I'm not sure what exactly he's referring to) and that it is in a sense scary, but there {he} is getting stoned and all. Well, that's not a very big accomplishment at all so he realizes he needs to change. The key part of the song is "There's a cotton crush down in the southern states. But back up here, man, we've got so much thread and space to waste, waste, waste." Hence, the song title, Cotton Crush. He's trying to get the point across that almost the majority of the U.S. is so self concerned and doesn't give a shit about anyone else. We just take, take, take, or as he puts it "waste." Down in the south there is space that is actually put to use. They use cotton fields and things they need where as up north, land is taken for granted and wasted. When he refers to the 'so much thread' I think he's talking about our manufacturing of clothes and just how concerned we are with image these days and how to look good (basically our own asses) rather than more important stuff. In my opinion, this song is mainly about realization, how things are doomed to repeat themselves, and change needs to take place. Though this song is sort of vague, perhaps on purpose, so it can be interpreted in all sorts of ways for the listeners. I love this song to death.

Obviously we all know this is a Kevin Devine song, we're in the fucking Kevin Devine section of the site. There is nothing wrong with appreciating Jesse Lacey's guest appearance.

This song has nothing to do about "emo" and him being sick of it. There's a crazy thing in the field of writing called metaphors and thats what he is using through out this song and most of his songs. He is comparing one thing with another. The song is about growing up and realizing in life you need to change. You can't be the kid you were in highscool/college. Kicking off the braces and start straightening out (metaphor) for leaving the kid in you and start growing up and being older.

I agree completely, drinkliquidclocks. This is a KEVIN DEVINE song. Not a Jesse Lacey song. Anyway, this song is amazing. I adore Kevin Devine and this song live blows my mind. I'm not really sure it has to do with growing up much... Maybe a bit of it. But I sense something a little politically driven. Hence "there's a cotton crush down in the southern states". But of course, that could be just me being a hopeful liberal :p

Kevins Father passed away last year, he had quite an hard time, as any decent and loving human would with that, alot of the people he thought were his friends ended up not being there for him, (he makes references to the failure of friendship in a few songs) he had been very let down byt the people he thought could be there to help him through tat hard time, I assume he ended up spending alot of time alone, stoned, and saw some girl wearing one of his shirts (more likely a Miracle of 86 shirt, but you people have no idea anyway) and seeing that and having the mixture of feeling of being let down by people you trusted, feeling the loss of his best friend (his father), and thinking of the band he disbanded and moved on from where too much at once he was done.. he just wants life to be good again, simple.. the simple sounds of life, not the static [the drama]

so it was really good to read all of this, the songs a lot deeper then i expected without truly KNOWING the lyrics. but the one thing i felt like i could contribute was the the braces part.. "kick off our braces and start straightening out" i mean, it could be to braces on your teeth.. but i took it as braces on your legs like..paralyzing effects from polio or something. i could very well be completely wrong. but i like it like that.

i love this song so much. the only part of this song i can really explain is the obvious "Then you'll be stoned in some park, just nodding your head and pinching your arms, when a girl walks along. She's humming your song, with your t-shirt on. That's when you're done, Oh, that's when you're done..." its like when kevin devine sees someone with a tshirt of his and it's just surreal and creepy to see someone with his shirt and humming to words he wrote.

wow. ummm am i the only one that sees this as being about going through the rockstar cycle, and crashing and burning? its made obvious through Kevin Devine and the GDB's lyrics, that he has problems with addiction. The beginning, with the bricks, says that he tries to fix himself over and over, and every time he just falls down again. the second part of the first verse, "your friends won't wait," refers to the fact that no one's gonna wait for you to straighten out. "then you'll be stoned in some park, just nodding your head, and pinching your arms, when a girl walks along, she's humming your song, with your t-shirt on. that's when you're done." this part is saying that he's burned out, stoned, when he sees someone who truly admires him. feeling that he is actually a failure, he feels like he's done. the next part, for which the song was named, seems to me to be from another point of view. looking down on him. its saying that kevin (in the southern states), is basically in a living hell (there's a cotton crush). by the way, i know that's backwards. but, the person looking down on him (but back up here, man), is doing just fine, so he won't do anything about it (we've got so much thread and space to waste, waste, waste). possibly his parents? the microphone part, is basically to the same effect. someone (there's a microphone) is seeing it all happen (picking up every word), but this person closes his or her self up when kevin needs help (and it shuts itself off when it's sure it's heard enough) the rest is saying that maybe he needs to suffer to learn, to get better than he is, or "to find a simpler sound than the shit that's clouding our heads now." by the way, i like Kevin Devine more than Brand New. i think KD's music is more sincere.

i honestly think this song is about growing up. and how you need to realize whats important to you before its too late for you. "Let's sift through the static to find a simpler sound... simpler sound than the shit that's clouding our heads now" because before you know it, you could end up in a coma, or dead. or anything. so realize whats important before its too late.

i dont think this song has anything to do with growing up. "your friends won't wait" i think is just your friends won't stop and be there for you when your stuck or down. as for the rest i feel its about politics and a weeping generation of songwriters (within the genre). instead of always crying or critisizing a problem, resolve it. come up with a solution. "sift through the static." also hence why this song is politcally driven as well (propaganda, media, everything). its such a complex song and begging to be over analyzed, yet the message is concise. figure it out for yourself.

"Then you'll be stoned in some park, just nodding your head and pinching your arms, when a girl walks along. She's humming your song, with your t-shirt on. That's when you're done, Oh, that's when you're done.." always gets to me! also, i don't know if ya'll have figured this out yet, but i'm pretty sure everyone mentioning jesse lacey knew this was a kevin devine song, they were just noting that jesse lacey does backup vocals in cotton crush. or at least it sounds that way.

up there as one of my favorite songs ever. when the harder part comes in with "there's a cotton crush" it's incredible. this song live kicked my ass. hard. it still hurts.
