E
Lately I've been spendin' lots of time
with my kid
A
Tellin' him stories
About the things that we did
E
When we were a family
B7
Long time ago
E
I've answered his questions
Till I'm blue in the face
A
Wish all the hurt in him
I could erase
E B7
But I tell him the truth
E
'Cause he ain't too young to know
A
Single father
E
Part time mother
B7
When I'm not one
E
Then I'm the other
A
You used to be
E
My full time lover
B7
Now I'm a single father
E
And part time mother
E
I spend every minute
I can with my boy
A
There's no doubt about it
He's my pride and joy
E
Someday he'll grow up
B7
And I won't have him no more
E
Some things I just find
Too hard to explain
A
So we go to McDonalds
Or I buy him a train
E B7
And we put it together
E
On the living room floor
A
Such is the life
Of a single father
E
He says daddy explain
If it's not too much bother
B7
While it's just you and me
E
Living here in this home
A
I don't understand it
And either does he
E
Why there's just two
When there should be three of us
B7
Sharing this moment
E
Lord I feel so alone
A
Single father
E
Part time mother
B7
When I'm not one
E
Then I'm the other
A
You used to be
E
My full time lover
B7
Now I'm a single father
E
And part time mother

It's extremely obvious what the meaning is. He and the mother of his son are separated and he is trying to raise the boy on his own. He's doing the best he can, being a mom and a dad both at the same time to a very confused child who just wants everything to be normal and okay.
