really good song...more metal than hxc, id say. theyre more metallica or in flames then say a metalcore/hardcore band like avenged sevenfold or evergreen terrace like some people have compared them to...good song nonetheless tho

Interview with Jesse Leach (original singer): "My Last Serenade" has a lot of meanings for me. It's really about burning bridges. There comes a time when you have to leave people behind and just let them know that you care and there's only so much love you can give somebody until they drag you down with them." Isn't that the best truth you've ever heard?

I compared them to old Metallica...when they made decent music, if you listen some of the opening parts to some of their songs do sound alot like stuff off of "Ride the Lightning", and a few of their songs sound like left-overs fron "...and Justice for All". Yes they do sound like a bit of Machinehead. They aren't completely original, KSE is a really great band but they do have a bit of those two band's sounds as well as many other bands in their music. And they arent hardcore, "Alive or Just Breathing" is a Metal album (with Hardcore influences), their earlier work may be hardcore but like it or not they are very much a Metal band, based on that album.

First of all - am I the only one who thinks that constantly trying to classify music as one genre or another is the worst thing you can possibly do? There's always someone who wants to blindly beat up on some random genre that they have something again. Black metal fans think death metal isn't evil enough, death metal fans think Nu-metal isn't different enough, alt-rock fans think metal is just noise, and everyone seems to hate pop. Stop trying to classify songs so you can find a neat and clean reason for not liking them. Anyway... Killswitch Engage is a great band. This wasn't the first song of theirs that I heard, but for their most mainstream song I still think it's pretty damn good. Like a few of you said, I think My Last Serenade is about realizing that you can only go so far with friendship and love and that sooner or later you need to stop letting people rely on you. I think the lyrics and title support this fairly well. From what I can tell the song is told from the perspective of the singer talking to someone who's dragging themselves down in self pity. I don't want to analyze the whole song, but a few examples: "The truth is absolution From sorrow to SERENITY, it's on your head" He's basically telling the person he's talking to that the way they feel is on their head. It's up to them to choose whether to wallow in their own sadness or rise above it and no one else can help them. "This is my last serenade I feel you as you fall away This is my last serenade From yourself you can't run away " This is the last time he'll bother telling this person what to do. From now on they have to work out their own problems. He's pretty much saying you can't run away from yourself, so if everyone else leaves you to work out your own problems you have no choice other than to confront them. Yadda yadda yadda I think you get the point. It's a fairly obvious song, I think ;)

This is song is beautiful. Killswitch Engage is the best and has been the best since I first heard them. How much better can this band get? The skys the limit here. We're looking at a huge band in the future of local hardcore. (Boston) !
