Kreator is a popular thrash metal band from Essen, Germany. They originally started under the name Tormentor. Starting their career in the early 1980s, they played thrash metal with heavy Slayer and Venom influences. Their style of music is similar with their compatriots Destruction and Sodom (usually referred by the fans as the Trinity of Thrash Metal). They differ from the Bay Area Thrashers by their brutality and speed. Kreator's work has been consistently in the vein of pure thrash with the exception of three albums during the 1990's when they undertook serious experimentation. Incorporating industrial, goth and avante-gard elements into their sound, the results were uneven, with the exception of the 1997 release Outcast which was a brilliant modern metal work and arguably the band's finest achievement.
