In The Evening
Led Zeppeling

The intro thing is just a droning synthesizer and Jimmy playing the open
E-string with a bow. The overdub is called(I think) a rotovibe which
is a little spinning wheel which when you touch it to the string,
produces that rolling sound.

The main riff is double-tracked and with a little adlibbing is basically:
by the way this is with a strat, or something with a whammy bar:

Its definately about a guy looking for a hooker at night: In the evening, When the day is done I'm looking for a woman, but the girl don't come (The guy just finished working, and he goes looking around town for a prostitute. When he finds one she wont accept his offer) So don't let her, Play you for a fool She don't show no pity baby, she don't make no rules (She wont accept but the guy wont give up... she eventually gives in and she hops in the car. He reckons she might rip him offor whatever, so he tells her the rules, and what expects from her) Oh, oh, I need your love, I need your love Oh, I need your love, I just got to have (After the guys finished wih his rules for the woman, she tells him to pull over and he begs her to stay "I need you love, etc, etc") So don't you let her, Oh, get under your skin It's only bad luck and trouble, From the day that you begin (He wont let her take control of the situation, and is worried hed be caught, so he keeps driving and ends up having sex with her, [even though she may not like it]) I hear you crying in the darkness, Don't ask nobody's help Ain't no pockets full of mercy baby, Cause you can only blame yourself (She keeps on crying and calling for help, but he tells her theres no one out there to help her, and that he's being very merciful, and that she has only herself to blame) Oh it's simple, All the pain that you go through You can turn away from fortune, fortune, Cause that's all that's left to you (He tells her that she may have a rough job, but at least shes getting paid) It's lonely at the bottom, Man, it's dizzy at the top But if you're standing in the middle, Ain't no way you're gonna stop (Telling her that both he and her are alike... They work hard, and feel like shit some of the time, while feeling good the rest of the time) Oh whatever that your days may bring No use hiding in a corner, Cause that won't change a thing If you're dancing in the doldrums, One day soon, it's got to stop, it's got to stop (He tells her that she has to keep on trying, and its no use hiding away... and that she'll evetually leave prostitution, and go somewhere much more cultured) When you're the master of the off-chance, When you don't expect a lot (If prostitution is all she thinks is right for her, and shes too lazy to move on, she is an idiot, according to the guy) Quick summary of the song: A guy who works hard, finds and persuades a hooker to spend th enight with him, and he ends up raping her, (but paying as well), and giving her important information... Hopefully after this the hooker will move on to a better job. LOL crazy... but its the most accurate meaning i can get out of this song...

The meaning's pretty clear, so I won't talk about that. Something's been bothering me about this song; does the guitar bit at 6:01-6:04ish sound a lot like something from the Rolling Stones' Sympathy For The Devil to anyone else?

every time I listen to this song from time to time I still feel the same thing for it because the songs resembles what I went thru with a girl and that is why I feel attached to this song and I have a very special feeling to it, because at one time I asked myself: what should I do to keep the girl with me?

I like how it sounds like the guitar just crashes into it and explodes. Like it was trapped and then blew out of the cage and started going. How'd they do it?

interesting interpretation.... anyway, this is a very good song, at first glance it seems to be a song about somone who is controlled by his girlfriend and needs to stand up to her...and then his journey from the bottom back up.

so those are the lyrics... the way plant sings it you don't know what they are until you look at them, great song.
