as is the case in a few other Led Zeppelin songs, this song has some references to Tolkien's work. he once wrote a poem of the same title as this song. personally, i think this song may have something to do with Aragorn and Arwen's relationship.

Stairway was written by Paige. Though he would only let Plant sing it, even if there was a time when it would be played and Plant wasn't there, Paige would play the whole thing as an instrumental. What you may be confusing that with is the intro to the song was not created my Zeppelin. It was borrowed from the song "Taurus" by Spirit, a group that toured with Zeppelin.

I cant beleive that nobody has nailed the meaning of this song yet! It was obvious to me the first time I heard this song that it was about sleeping around! The first four lines are about his desire for women. Then - "Many times I've gazed along the open road." He keeps looking for more women "Many times I've wondered how much there is to know" (about women) "You really ought to know..." -(You really ought to sleep around) I know I havent explained myself well but I cant be bothered doing a better job. Just think about it, it all fits. -Know
