DEATH ON THE STAIRS

A#
From way far across the sea
F
Came an eritsean maiden she
GM
Had a one track mind and eyes for me
GM
Half blinded in the war
CM
With a pale young anglican
F
Who said he'd help her all he can
A# D#
Showed her Jesus and his little un-holy friend
CM
She had no mind to please him
F A#
Just say 'ta-ra' and leave him behind

There's a little boy in a stairwell who say
"I hate people like you"
Got matches & cable TV half of less than 50p
We all clambered over the balcony
Banging on the window waking steve
Bringing with a new love his un-holy friend
If you really need it you mustn't leave it behind
A# D#
Please kill me no don't kill me
F
But don't bring that ghost round to my door

I don't wanna see them anymore

A# D#
Please kill me no don't kill me
F
But don't bang on about yesterday
I wouldn't know about that anyway

Monkey asked the mouse before
If she loved anybody more than he
It turns you into stone
Now i'm reversing down this lonely street
To a cheap hotel when i can meet the past
And pay it off and keep it sweet
It's sweet like nothing at all
Yes i've seen you there how could i help but stare
It rips the heart out off your body
Now i've taken far too much to think
Or see or touch what's real i'm stranded on this street that
Paved my only way home
You really need it you just won't leave it behind
He got nothing he got nothing at all

The phrase 'Death on the stairs' comes from when Pete and Carl where trying to get a record deal, and they'd often get chucked down the stairs of record companies.

Another brilliant song. I love the lines "From way far across the sea came and Eritrean maiden she had a one track mind & eyes for me".

i don't have bad taste in music the libertines are actually one of my favorite bands, people are really into conjecture, i just said they got the lyrics wrong. How did you think i knew they got the lyrics wrong if i hadn't listened to this song a few times?

I agree with monsoonboy on the meaning of the phrase 'death on the stairs' - that anecdote is included in the book 'Bound Together'. For me though, this song is more about encapsulating youth and young adult life - drunken misadventures, falling in and out of love, etc - the type of behaviour which is almost complete opposite to the state of body and mind that 'death on the stairs' refers to, and the lyrics are almost a romantic guideline to avoiding 'death on the stairs'.

"twelve rudeboys on the oars" is refering to pete and legs XI, the other "sailors" on the good ship albion. legs XI once included johnny borrel.

Indeed it does.. also, just to be pedantic, the little boy on the stairwell says: "i hate being poor like you".. This is probably my favourite libertines songs, and i pretty much love them all. It's just about their simpler, romaticised times before fame and all that.

I love this song, one of the best on the CD in my opinion, next to Time For Heroes. Even though the entire CD kicks ass.
