Verse: | D5 | D5/C# | Em | G | x3

Sittinī on the beach, the island king of love
Deep in fijian seas, deep in some blissful dream
Where the goddes finally sleeps, in the lap of her lover
Subdued in all her rage,

saves

I wanna dance with you, I see a world where people live and die with

The karmic ocean dried up and leave no trace
I wanna dance with you, I see a sky full of the stars that change our

And lead us back to a world we would not face

Verse: | D5 | D5/C# | Em | G | x3

The stillnes in your eyes, convinces me that I, I donīt know a thing

You show me what this life is for

I wanna dance with you, I see a world where people live and die with

I just love the imagery of this song. Purely beautiful. Just the idea of gazing at the stars, letting your eyes wander across the entire sky until they have no choice but to return to our world that we'd rather not face. Beautifully captures the feeling of escape you experience when just sitting still and watching the stars. I love it

At first, I too thought this song was a love song. However, like most of Live's awesome lyrics, I think this song has a much deeper meaning. Knowing that at the time "The Distance to Here" was recorded, Ed was heavily influenced by eastern religious thought, I would argue that this song is a description of what it feels like to meditate, and be at complete peace with oneself. Just read the lyrics carefully, and notice the imagery used to describe the 'lover" in the song...it's a deep song. Live is such a great band, because the lyrics are true poetry.

Just read through this, really interesting..... I think it's this whole religious thing. He's talking about god, and "paradise" => "world where people live and die with grace" i'll have to explain that. people are always busy with their life, but they forget the more important things, like God maybe, because it's not as obvious and glamorous.it's harder to live with god and be different. He says that only when we are really down, we come back to him "and I been around the world and I've tasted all the wines a half a billion times came sickened to your shores you show me what this life is for " and then he says, that when we look at the stars we can see that world, and we are reminded of how life could be "I see a sky full of the stars that change our minds and lead us back to a world we would not face" the world we could not face => we are to scared and lazy to risk the other life we could have. he even says "oh lord"..... I know it might sound strange, but just read through the song thinking of this. It will make sense to you. It doesn't have to be a christian godby the way... Live havbe such a good way, of having the most beautiful lyrics and still having a deeper message. brilliant my fav song ever........

rtplease, i think your opinion is great. i agree with that and i have another little point to add if thats okay: "world where people live and die with grace" to me means that in his meditation, every natural thing that happens is not draining. It is calm and he feels relaxed in this state even with death.

Okay, so here's a really obscure take on this song. I'm sure almost everyone out there has read Homer's Odyssey in some capacity, and the first time I heard this song I was in the middle of reading it and it struck me...here's my interperitation...love it or hate it, I don't care, but it's mine and it's unique. sittin' on the beach the island king of love - Odysseus on Ithica deep in fijian seas deep in some blissful dream - if you look at the geography of the story, much of his adventures take place in the south pacific, which the Fiji islands are right smack dab in the middle of. where the goddess finally sleeps in the lap of her lover subdued in all her rage - Penelope is finally reunited with her husband after 20 years, her anger quelled from his lenghty absence and I am aglow with the taste of the demons driven out and happily replaced with the presence of real love the only one who saves - the suitors (demons) have been driven out of their house and replaced by Odyessus and their love for one another. wanna dance with you I see a world where people live and die with grace the karmic ocean dried up and leave no trace I wanna dance with you I see a sky full of the stars that change our minds and lead us back to a world we would not face - in reading greek literature and mythology, the greeks are always portrayed as such beautiful, graceful people. They held faith in their gods and were not ruled by anything but their own actions...even believing that their gods were not infalliable...just the encarnation of immortal people who faced issuse just like everyone else. Odysseus' need to go from ithica leaves penelope in a world that she cannot face. the stillness in your eyes convinces me that I I don't know a thing and I been around the world and I've tasted all the wines a half a billion times came sickened to your shores you show me what this life is for - Odysseus realizes all that he has lost by leaving penelope for such a long time, yet his passion and love for his wife still remains deeply within his heart. He travled throughout the world, his only purpose to return to ithica. he was housed and fed on many islands and by many people, but he still came home to his wife who was the only person able to remind him of the purpose life; love. in this altered state full of so much pain and rage you know we got to find a way to let it go - everything has changed since Odysseus has been gone and his absence has caused so much anger and anguish for penelope, but now that he's back, she is able to set it free and simply be in love with her husband. sittin' on the beach the island king of love deep in fijian seas deep in the heart of it all where the goddess finally sleeps after eons of war and lifetimes she smilin' and free, nothin' left but a cracking voice and a song, oh lord - penelope and odysseus are finally back in each other's arms, and she is finally able to really sleep again because he is home to protect her. They suffered through 21 years of war and lifetimes lost from being apart, but now that he's home, she is finally complete again.

I'm a huge fan of Live. And although Ed writes things with a deeper meaning in mind, sometimes it's nice to take things more superficially. That being said, taking this as a love song: Been around the world and I've tasted all the wines a half a billion times came sickened to your shores you show me what this life is for I think it isn't too far-fetched to think of this as being representative of two people that have been friends but it took them a long time to become lovers. The man has "been around the world" and "tasted all the wines, a half a billion times" meaning that he's traveled and been with many different women but in the end he realizes that no one will ever measure up to his "goddess" that's been waiting on him so he "came sickened to [her] shores" and she showed him what he had been missing and how wonderful life could be for them together. Agree? Disagree? Indifferent?

lizziebelle, What a wonderful interpretation, never thought of this song in that light before.Whether the love and loss penolope and odysseus endured reflects a modern condition or this song speaks directly about this tale is unclear. Perhaps it's the eternal paradox of love throughout the ages speaks a common tale among various storytellers through time. An intriguing idea!

I think this song shows how important love is to have. The lines "came sickened to your shores you show me what this life is for " shows the dependance of love, and the ability to lean on those we love when times get rough. Great song, Live is a great band

I think most of you have this all wrong.. This song speaks of liberation. It has nothing really to do with any Western religions, but entirely with Buddhism/Hinduism. The liberation is the "real love" that one acheives when the release all their inner deamons. This happens when one is free from Karma (Karmic ocean dried up). These people live and die with grace because the have acheived the highest level of any spirituality possible. i think the singer though is not sure whether he wants to be liberated. he is still tempted by the 'other' world "I see a sky full of the stars that change our minds / and lead us back to a world we would not face" He feels like he should go back to the other world, and this desire is proof that he has yet to acheive Moksa (the world for liberation).
