9/11 is the theme to this song. All you have to do is watch the video. The song wasnt originally written about 9/11 but even the band admits it has taken on the meaning. just watch the video if you get the chance. it made me cry. And I must say after seeing the video and the aftermath of 9/11 "I am Overcome"

This song is about drowning under the weight of life. Ed is overcome by the despair of life. That we have it good compared to others.

The band did an interview a loooong time ago about this song. It was about an experience of the band members had when he was baptized. They really didn't explain themselves well, but talking about being dunked under the water in a lake when they were a teenager. "holy water in my lungs" "beautiful drowning"

I just heard an interview that Ed had on 92.3 WKRX (?) in New York. He said that he had the lyrics for a few years and last year while on tour, he re-edited it based upon things he views on the news (Palestine, school shootings, etc). However, it was definitely written and finalized before 9/11 (1 year to the date, RIP all...). Despite this, for many, as noted above and elsewhere, it has taken on 9/11 connotations. Nevertheless, I think it is a great song.

This is one of the most beatiful songs I have ever heard. True ed can get a little abstract with his lyrics at times but he always leads you back to the truth that whether your talking about september 11th, the cruel and uncarring world, or whatever that love and kindness is what trueley matter!

This was the first song I heard off of the new album, and it was released (if I'm correct) right around 9/11. I know the cd came out a few weeks after that. I agree with Els24, this song struck an emmotional chord with me. It brought tears to my eyes, and summed up my feelings on that day into 3 words: I am overcome.

This is the prettiest song I've ever heard. It may be despairing, but it's also undeniably peaceful.

oh my God this shows how in tune Live is with the outside world ... it touched home b/c of 9/11 but they're talkin about other places how thats real life that we didn't see before the tragedy ... once again they manage to mention deep and meaningful things without depressing us and actually giving us a sence of hope for the future

This song has taken on a 9.11 theme for me. It totally makes me sad and reminds me of the days just after 9.11. You can download a tribute video that was featured on VH1. Excellent song. your help is here

the song itself was not about 9/11, but the video was shot after the attack. they used footage of the rescue team working on the site and also of the onlookers and afterwards of the flowers and that which were placed at ground zero in memory of those that died.

This is one of my favorite songs ever! (In fact I am currently attempting to learn the piano part). Something I've noted about it is that at the end it says, "Holy water in my lungs, this beautiful drowning." In a way I think they're saying that although it's holy or good, it is causing him pain and suffering. In a way... Or vice versa.
