Hey I was talking to Dave(the lead singer of Mae for all you kiddos that dont know) about a week ago, and in his exact words "this song is about my step mom going back to school to become a physicians assistant.... or just giving up all together". So there you all are. Straight from the man who wrote it.

i don't think this song is about abortion, maybe its because the idea is so new to me that it sounds so absurd, however it is a possibility. we associate wet, with new or fresh, young; naive. like a butterfly's wings when they first sttretch out. leading me to the thought of a new beginning... i think that Tisbury lane is about a girl, that the singer is romantically interested in, that has recently become available, maybe like a 'best friend whose in love with the taken girl' scenario? to me 'vacate the building' is clearing out everything that is unneccesary from her life, materialistically by getting rid of his stuff and emotionally...staying single for awhile. if she fails and is miserable and lets him break her heart, then 'there'll be no one to see' i think she just too tired of all the bullshit to talk on the phone, frustrated with her situation. she was left and now she's trying to keep herself from wondering if he'll ever come back, even though she knows that the answer will make her situation change and change, of any kind, is better than waiting. and our poor singer is left to be the crying shoulder and nothing more. he has to keep cheering her on and even it means that getting back with him will make her happy...he has to be the good guy and want only her happiness. whatever he meant to express in these lyrics...it is a great song and fun to play.

It seems like the person in this girl's life is going to move away and leave, and she's pleading with him to stay. If she isn't successful then she doesn't want others to know her attempt has been in vain. She's part of the reason that he's leaving, and so she feels responsible for it and that's part of the reason for her changing how she lives. The singer knows the situation and is wishing the best and that's where it's told from.

it seems as if this song is about a normal-turned-unstable girl wanting to commit suicide because her life had been filled with numerous emotionally..scarring events. the impression i get from the first few lines is that the girl has ended up in some kind of a mental institution, reinforced by the third stanza- "they're watching her with eyes closed." when the song describes 'them' "barging in to beat her down," it sounds as if 'they' are somehow stopping her suicidal attempts. from how i see the song, the girl's sitiuation appears to be similar to esther greenwood from Sylvia Plath's novel The Bell Jar. there's something sad about this song, something that makes it appropriate to listen to when you need a good cry. the chord progressions are amazing and like finked_dudeguy says, it's fun as well as calming to play.

To me personally this song has many memories, as i used it in my first amateur show that i did properly.. if that makes any sense... but also, i think it could kinda be about the second coming of christ.. im not religious at all really, but i think that could kinda be it 'will you come back'-jesus? 'if she could just get the word out'-spreading he's coming back... actually, while writing this, i've realised thats probly quite rong... i think it may be more about the girl is really depressed, and thats defined by the points above, and maybe the 'willl you come back' is here asking jesus? she wants Jesus to come back, cause she feels he could save her... just an idea also, the bass in this is awesome! the walking riff just finishes the tune perfectly, and makes it really...perfect

I think it's about the girl being pregnant, and the guy left her. "Because she's got a plan they don't know yet And if it goes wrong, there'll be no one to see" I think is about her planning to do some sort of at home abortion attempt .and if it goes wrong and she dies then no one will be there to see. and also it will spare her the 'embarassment' of people knowing she's pregnant. "If she could just get the word out " Is her wanting ot tell someone but she is to oashamed or what not. "Will you come back? It's all she wants to know She knows she's part of the problem too" Is her wanting to know if the guy will come back. and that she knows she can't blame the pregnancy on him because she's at fault too.. That is what i got from it... anyways... good song...

I do think it might be about her commiting suicide, but maybe the last line makes me think different "Could she let it go? It'd take a miracle So that's what I'm praying for" That for some reason makes it sorta seem like the singer is talking about how she is so depressed from "him" and that last line makes me think the singers saying will she let him go and move on and it makes me think the singer loves her too, but won't try to do anything until she lets "him" go.

mae is definitely a religious band, listen to all of their lyrics and you can tell... at least it seems pretty obvious to me. I agree w/ twiztedkandy, it's about a girl trying to get The Word out, but she's doubting herself, knows she shouldn't (she knows she's part of the problem...) I take it as the girl knows that Jesus IS coming back, but she wants to know when, like in her lifetime?
