Tired of his own vain wishes, a symbolic door (suicide) leads to a symbolic river (neverending flow of life and death, end of self-consciousness). The door is in front of him, like a temptation. A sense of sin is withdrawing him. No final solution, no advice, no side taken, just the presence of the door to the river, like a chance.
