Forgive the lack of time representation as this is my
first time tabbing anything and I am using a text
editor, not a tabbing program. This should give you a
good start though.

Intro and Chorus riff:
E:======0=====================================
B:========0=====3=1===========0===============
G:============2=============0=======0===4=====
D:====2=====0=============0=======0=====4==7*=
A:==0===================2=======3=======2==7*=
E:=========================================5*=

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
*You can also use this chord which is more convenient
since the rest of the riff is played in the same part
of the guitar, but for some reason I find it easier to
play on the bottom 3 strings:

G:==2=
D:==2=
A:==0=
E:====
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I can tell you what they say in space that our earth
is too gray...
(That first part of Chorus has no guitar.)
But when the spirit is so digital...
E:======0=====================================
B:========0=====3=1===========0===============
G:============2=============0=======0===4=====
D:====2=====0=============0=======0=====4==7*=
A:==0===================2=======3=======2==7*=
E:=========================================5*=

The nervous system's down...
E:=====================================
B:=====================================
G:==44444444===========================
D:==44444444=77777777=5555555555555555=
A:==22222222=77777777=5555555555555555=
E:===========55555555=3333333333333333=

I can never get out of here...
E:======================================
B:======================================
G:====================55555555==========
D:==33333333=77777777=55555555=77777777=
A:==33333333=77777777=33333333=77777777=
E:==11111111=55555555==========55555555=

Sometimes we walk like we were shot through our heads
my love...
(Again no guitar for the first part.)
We write a song in space like we're...
E:======0=====================================
B:========0=====3=1===========0===============
G:============2=============0=======0===4=====
D:====2=====0=============0=======0=====4==7*=
A:==0===================2=======3=======2==7*=
E:=========================================5*=

I can never get out of here...
E:======================================
B:======================================
G:====================55555555==========
D:==33333333=77777777=55555555=77777777=
A:==33333333=77777777=33333333=77777777=
E:==11111111=55555555==========55555555=

The nervous system's down... (this isn't any
discernable guitar this time, but I play this, which
roughly follows the bass line)
E:======================================
B:======================================
G:==44444444==========44444444==========
D:==44444444=22222222=44444444=44444444=
A:==22222222=22222222=22222222=44444444=
E:===========00000000==========22222222=

Then back to this riff for the rest of the song...
E:======================================
B:======================================
G:====================55555555==========
D:==33333333=77777777=55555555=77777777=
A:==33333333=77777777=33333333=77777777=
E:==11111111=55555555==========55555555=

This is my first try at tabbing, so if you use this

What's the song about? Disassociation from what? His inner feelings, his inner self? More than about drugs, and the stuff they do to his system. It's got a hidden meaning. He's disassociating himself from the world he knows, and lapsing into a state of nothingness, whereby he can feel at one with himself.

Manson has said in interviews prior to the release of Mechanical Animals (Sept 15, 1998) that Disassociative was totally about Special K (Ketamine Hydrochloride) its cat tranquilizer that you snort and it shuts down your nervous system, which is what happens when your body thinks its about to die. Manson said he would lay on a raft in his pool and snort a line of K, and stare at the stars over the Hollywood hills. The effect was a sort of Zero gravity like an astronaut in space.

sorry guys, here's a corrected version of my thoughts!!! i'm sorry! the song could be about a person who committed suicide or want to commit suicide. "I can tell you what they say in space; that our Earth is too grey. But when the spirit is so digital, the body acts this way. That world was killing me, world was killing me. Disassociative." - the people who committed suicide killed them because the world was killing them, the people bullied them and they got too much pain. Disassociative = he doesn't feel pain anymore (because he's dead) "The nervous system's down, the nervous system's down, and I know... The nervous system's down, the nervous system's down, and I know..." - The system of his body is down, he's dead. maybe manson used "nervous" because that was the way the person acted...he was different "Sometimes we walk like we were shot through our heads, my love. We write a song in space like we are already dead and gone." - that could be the time right before suicide, the people (who want to commit suicide) are in a very great depression, they think about everything in their lives, if it makes sence to be alive. just a thougt...thats MY meaning.... sorry for my bad english AGAIN !! :-[

The chorus is kind of a sequel to David Bowie's Space Oddity (look it up if you don't know the lyrics). Of course, Marilyn Manson has been inspired by David Bowie (he said so himself but it wouldn't be that hard to guess). Anyway, I thought so, and tried to look it up. The wikipedia says so too, but what do they know. =P Anyway, it does seem to fit. Of course it's not solely about Major Tom..

Well we all (should) know that both Antichrist Superstar and MA are concept albums, one following the other...sure there are drug references, but name me a Manson album that doesnt? that aside....the song, for me, has always been about realising that "the end" is upon us, and perhaps realising that there is nothing left...."dead astronaut in space"...whatever would become of him? Its kinda hard to explain...my band likes to cover this :)

i think this song is describing the state of the world we have come to, by bieng so materialistic and less in faith of our own beliefs what ever they may be.Also lonliness kills the mind like a cancer bec. of the way some societies imbarge on a person. so in conclusion i say to anyone feelling shung out of the world to embrace this song!!!

This song is using a ketamine trip as a metaphor for the way he feels. K is a disassociative anaesthetic, hence the name. There lyrics involving space, and astronauts are refering to the effects of the drug, which make you feel dissociated from your body, and floating above it. They call this feeling 'Space Travel'

Akasha was mainly right. All of Manson's songs on his triptych (Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals, and Holy Wood) have multiple meanings. There is a central character going through everything you read in these songs as well as whatever else you can derive out of them. So in essence, you are all correct because this is art and is meant to be interpreted however the listener decides to interpret.
