Subject: Dope Hat by Marilyn Manson
Here are the chords for the song Dope Hat by Marilyn Manson. It is off
of Portrait of an American Family. Dope Hat is a groovy tune that makes
my feet soak.
Intro
Slide down to F#5 A5 F#5 C5 B5 F#5
THEN SOME DUDE SAYS SOME INTERESTING THINGS
Then slide down to F#5 C#5 C5 B5
I peek into the hole
I struggle for control
the children love the show
but they fail to see the anguish in my eyes
fail to see the anguish in my eyes
THEN THERE IS A SOLO KIND OF THING. ANYTHING YOU PLAY PRETTY MUCH
SOUNDS RIGHT. I AM JUST A PIECE. THE MAIN RIFF PLAYS THROUGH IT.
I scratch around the brim
I let my mind give in
The crowd begins to grin
but they seem to scream as darkness fills my eyes
seem to scream as darkness fills my eyes
it's no suprise
THEN WE HAVE
F#5 A5 F#5 C5 B5
Fail to see the tragic
Turn it into magic
B5 G5 B5 G5
My big top tricks will always make you happy
C#5 A5 C#5 A5
But we all know the hat is wearing me
THEN SLIDE DOWN WHILE STRUMMING.
My bag is in the hat
It's filled with this and that
My vision's getting fat
the rabbits just a monkey in disguise
stars and pills and needles dance before our eyes
They will bite the hand
If it's slower than
the quickness of their scrutinizing eyes
THEN THERE IS ANOTHER SOLO TYPE THING HERE. I DIDN'T FIGURE IT OUT SO
NOW YOU SHALL SUFFER. LIKE, DROP YOUR GUITAR AND DANCE ON IT AND IT
MIGHT SOUND RIGHT. MAYBE NOT...
Fail to see the tragic
Turn it into magic
My big top tricks will always make you happy
but we all know the hat is wearing me
Eb5 B5 Eb5 B5
Chicanery will always make you happy
F5 C#5 F5 C#5
But we all know the hat is wearing me
There it is. The great song called Dope Hat. Sometimes I like to
listen to it while I eat food. That is when I enjoy it the least,
though. Mostly I like to stick it. If you have any questions e-mail
me and I will answer all of them. This might have come out cruddy and
that would smell badly.

| But "Dope Hat" also featured elements alluding to the playful side of Marilyn Manson, emphasizing the central dichotomy of the band once more. Samples of actor Charles Nelson Reilly ppered the track, snippets of utterances from the Great Hoodoo, the evil magician who'd terrorized the Hat People in Sid and Marty Krofft's Saturday morning TV series Lidsville. The vividly colored, hallucinotory fantasy world of the Krofft's shows [H.R. Pufnstuf, The Bugaloos, Sigmund & The Sea Monsters] seems to have been an early Manson influence second only to Willy Wonka and Anton Lavey," observes MM aficianado Judy Pope. -Copied from the book Marilyn Manson, written Kurt B. Reighley. -Pages LI-LII | |

| My opinion is that it's the typical reaction of using drugs. First he has anguish, and later on the 'tragic' turns to 'magic'. And with 'magic' he means, he's high and everything is different: 'my vision's getting fat, the rabbit's just a monkey in disguise stars and pills and needles dance before our eyes'. The magic has such great impact that he can't live without drugs, he gets addicted: 'but we all know the hat is wearing me'. It's a fuckin great song! But i'm not sure if my comment is the real meaning of the song!!! | |

| Good song, What does it say on the back of the boat in the video? This is one of the few songs of early manson that I really like. If your looking for a straight interpretation: drugs. | |

| My opinion in this song is strangely controversial to the ones posted here. Instead of drugs this could be the hardships of someone who's gained fame in what they do and when something happens that's so bad to that same person they become sad and lonely and destructive but to be able to go on in life materially they continue to do their entertainment job, which causes a sort of insanity within that one, since he is doing something completely against his will. He's turning his "tragedy" into "magic", for the viewers, and he's not doing it because he wants to, it's for his own personal material needs. The hat is wearing him. | |

| I always thought of this song as a parody of Willy Wonka, and watching the video further helps my theory. My interpretation of the lyrics was that lines like "The children love the show" and so on were a reference to an "evil" Wonka. It's also a well known rumor that Manson wanted to pprtray Wonka in the remake of Rolad Dahl's book. | |

| In Manson's Biography, he mentions a few times that he took halluicgenic drugs, but they hit him really hard, made him see some very strong images. This is obviously discussing one of these trips "but we all know the hat is wearing me" is just one example of it. | |

| Alright, this song is, apparently, about drugs and a lack of control over most of them. While I tend to disagree (Drugs kick ass and open up a third eye), it's not my opinion whether or not you like them. GoD-Like summed it up. Also, MansonRapist, you're an idiot. There is no such thing as a fucking poser. Stop being an asshole, you're not that important. Just because you want to imagine that you're a "True Fan" of Manson doesn't mean it's true, and because you simply have to display your thinly plated veil of self-importance doesn't mean anyone who doesn't like Manson's older stuff is an idiot, a poser, or any other narcissistic label. In other words, you're not important or great. | |

| It could also be about his fans not really understanding him "the children love the show, but they fail to see the anguish in my eyes" to me, that line sounds like its about his fans enjoying listening to his music but they are oblivious to the way he really feels maybe because of drugs. | |
