(pay attention to how he plays it in the song. the rhythm is way off)
you repeat this part until the distortion kicks in. that's when you go to....

you repeat this part as many times as in the song.

A---------------------------------------------------------------------------
E-5-3-5---------5-3-5---------5-3-5---------5-3-5---------------------------
uhhhhh as far as i can tell it's just these notes on string 6. at least until....

the SOLO!!!!!!! i just play it all on string 1 but it can be done differently
e--7-8-7-8-7-8-7-5-3-12----7-8-7-8-12-7-8-7-10-12-14-12-10-8---7----0--3-0--

e--3-5-7-8-10-12------15-17-20-17-15-17-20-17-15-17-15-12-------------------

e--20-20-20-22-20-17-----------10-12------15----19-17-15--------------------

e--10-12-10-12-10----8------5-----------------------------------------------

and then, it's a rehash of the "counting the toll" part like this:
e-5-----3---------
B-x-----x-4-------
G-2-----0-x-------
D-2-----0-1-------
A---------0-------
E-----------------
repeat that until the end.

Maybe a different angle: The submarine trapping is metaphor for being stuck to the hospital bed. After finally, freeing himself, seeing all the other patients of every race and body type. The whole comatose state is the mental journey to the bridge and the final decision to snuff it, masked under hallucinations.

Just thought I'd comment on what "yall" had to say above... he/she was asking if there is a story behind the whole album which there is... It's about a friend(i think a past band member, i can't remember though) who injected so much rat poison that his body looked like a map and after the whole ordeal with rat poison he went into a coma for quite a long time. I can't remember all the small details so i'm being pretty general... Anyways the album is about this guy's life. They named it De-loused in the Comatorium after him and the fact that he was in a coma for such a long time. Anyways The Mars Volta kick ass-and ya it's true you gotta be in the mood for them. I saw them open for System Of A Down and I wasn't in the mood for their music before System, but aside from that they put on a wicked show.

haha i like what bloodlabpunkrock said. "matadors" for sure, dude. matadors. this is my favorite song on the CD too, cerpin is getting ready for eria tarka....sort of an in-between phase of comatorious endeavors.

if anyone needs to know the backup vocals during "is anybody there" and "these steps keep on growing long" they are "spines in a row" and "spite as an arrow"

At this point in the album, there is a battle between good and evil going on in his dreams.

leave it to TMV to completely change the setting of a story with one rush/phish/rage/slipknot/thrice/john phillip sousa breakdown. sorry if the bands mentioned don't agree, but there is more conviction and imagination on this album than most "artists" have in their entire career. even conor oberst. he may believe in what he says... but this is for a friend and his troubles. crying doesn't cut it. these guys are the matadors, period.

The background vocals, "Spnies in a row", "spine like an arrow" are lines from much later in the book describing the way cerpin's anonymous form looks after the doctor changes him(this happens in the song eriataka)

Probably my favorite Mars Volta song behind Take The Veil. Definately about Cerpin Taxt being stuck inside an old submarine and the strange things that occur aorund it (every make and model of airplanes and submarines crashing around him) and he's questioning his sanity.
