Anyone see the music video for this song yet? There it shows some of the supernatural beings of the mountain, particularly the ones with the white faces it talks about in this song. Though they look like cenataur which there is no mention of them in this song.

Gotta disagree with you on that one jek. I really don't think Homme contributes much to this song. All he really does is sing a couple of words as backup. And to be honest, I couldn't really tell it was him until someone told me. Would of been cooler if he got a slightly bigger part though. As for the meaning, everyone seems to be right saying that this song is about a bunch of tree people, but I'm more interested in the end. If you look at the lyrics in the first track, "The Wolf is Loose," it points out that the main protagonist is a werewolf, and that part of the reason he's climbing Blood Mountain is to rid himself of that curse. There's some references to that, especially the line: "Carve my teeth out ripping through the sheep's head curse." That could also explain the whole, "My heart's gone away," thing. I think he turns into the werewolf form again in this song. I don't really know, just trying to put the whole story together.

i too saw it on mtv at my surprise... I don't watch mtv for videos or anything for that matter; it is just on sometimes for my annoyance.

yeah i thinks that's right, i think he transforms into the werewolf to fight off the birchmen, just as they're about to kill him, hence the line "run with death". Then as soon as he turns back, he is attacked by the creatures in hunters of the sky. I also agree, Homme should have had a much bigger part, gotta love that riff after the second chorus though.

Love the groove metal in this song. Also some of jazzy, funky elements. The meaning, like so many songs on this album, some animal or ancient people.

i too agree with silersun rapture on the whole MTV thing. im getting pissed off seeing how in the past few months theyve been trying to make metal mainstream by playing killswitch engage, shadows falls, and now mastodon on their channel. they should keep those great bands on MTV2 on headbangers ball. that way those songs and bands get listened to by people who actually like them. besides all that ranting the song itself is wicked good. this and blood and thunder are my two favorites.

While I don't know much about the backstory to Blood Mountain, I got a cool LOTR storytelling vibe from this song. I was rather surprised to find out that Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal fame) had a vocal spot. I do wish he was more prominent, seeing as everything he does is really cool. From reading other comments, I surmise that the song is about a werewolf running from a colony of giant tree-people. Sounds completely ridiculous, I know. But that's why it's completely awesome. I saw the video on MTV. MTV!?!? Why would that station play this video? It's not exactly begging for mainstream exposure, with all the hip-hop/R&B surrounding it. Maybe MTV is slowly turning back to its rock roots again. Wait a minute, MTV sucks. Fuck MTV!!

Seems to me like this song is about the protagonist coming face-to-face with an enemy he can't fight off, and resorts to his werewolf form to defend himself, hence "My heart's gone away, Take it now". He's begging to change. What that's supposed to mean for the story and the hero, is anybody's guess.

this song makes me think of some primitive humanoid race thought to be extinct. theres probably still a colony of them living somewhere.

No the birchmen are a race of tree people, hence "birch" (a type of tree) and "men" (they are half human), they are also mentioned in the bit with weird vocals in circle of cysquatch, and Brent even mentions them in the making of documentary. Though i remember reading an article that Brann wrote that said that the intro to crystal skull was inspired by Peter's Jackson's version of king kong, and this song always reminds me of the bit in the canyon with the giant bugs. It has that same atmosphere that the characters are on the verge of dying in a terrible place where no human has survived.

The birchmen are quite efficient predators in the path of our protag. Wolfbane full gallop, swooping branches with katana like fury, focus burning.....Backup vox just a subtle nuance. This is the climax. Making it past the birchman DEVESTATOR (transformers, you dork) gives our hero enuff momentum to run with any fiend. Behemoth, Moby Deez, Wyverns, wolves, whatevvv, lion, tigers, ogers and bears... As the the birchmen combine - Wolfbane remains unphased by the size amassed. The getaway fueled by ambition. Can he handle hisself???
