All I Need – Mat Kearney
Capo On First Fret
All Chords Relative to Capo
Am G C
Here it comes it’s all blown in tonight
Am G C
I woke up this morning to a blood-red sky
Am G C
Burning on the bridge, turning off the lights
Am G C
We’re on the run I can see it in your eyes
Am G F
If Nothing Is safe then I don’t understand
Am G F
You call me your boy but I’m trying to be the man
Am G F
One more day and it’s all sleeping with the sand
Am G F
You touch my lips and grab the back of my hand
C Am F G
The back of my hand.
Am G C
I guess we both know we’re in over our heads
Am G C
We’ve got nowhere to go and no home that’s left
Am G C
The water is rising on a river turning red
Am G C
It all might be OK or we might be dead
Am G F
If everything we’ve got is slipping away
Am G F
I meant what I said when I said ‘Till my dying day
Am G F
I’m holding on to you holding onto me
Am G F
Baby it’s all gone black, but you’re all I see
C Am F G
You’re all I see
Am G C
Walls are shaking hear them sound the alarm
Am G C
Glass just breaking so don’t let go of my arm
Am G C
Grab your bags and a picture of where we met
Am G C
All that we leave behind is all that’s left
Am G F
If everything we got is blowing away
Am G F
We got a rock and a rock till our dying day
Am G F
I’m holding on to you holding onto me
Am G F
Baby it’s all we got but it’s all I need
C Am F G
You’re all I need
C Am F G
C
And if all we’ve got
Am
Is what no one can break
F
I know I love you
G
If that’s all we can take
C
The tears are coming down
Am
They’re mixing with the rain
F
I know I love you
G C
If that’s all we can take
Am G C
Bull is running for miles on the concrete ground
Am G C
We’re 8 feet deep and the rain is still coming down
Am G C
TV’s playing it all out of town
Am G C
I’m grabbing at the fray for something that won’t drown
This is my first submission. I think the lyrics are right, I had trouble trying to get
The chords are dead on. It sounds great finger picked since the song has a piano in it.

| This song was on grey's anatomy the other night - absolutely gorgeous. To me, this song is about a guy who is in love and wants the girl to see him as a strong person - he's "trying to be the man." Initally, the stronger person in the relationship is the girl, as she grabs the back of his hand. When you take someone's hand, you usually clasp fingers, but in this case, she's pulling him forward like a little kid. As the song progresses, the guy sways from professing his strength, to telling her not to let go, and then to reminding her that "he meant what he said when he said until his dying day." He realizes that the girl is afraid of something, but she's trying not to show it. Instead of calling her out on it, he tells her that the love they have for each other is all HE needs, instead of what "we" need. He tries to make himself look weaker for the sake of making her feel stronger. At the end, it should be "I'm grabbing at the fray for something that won't drown." This could be the realization that he's the stronger person, or possibly that he's already lost her and has to be on his own. Whatever the situation, he knows that loving her and knowing that the love existed was all he needed. | |

| his choice of words and phrases in this song are precise to the feeling he is trying to portay. "They're burning on the bridge, turning of the lights We're on the run I can see it in your eyes" In the sense of burning a bridge is taking that relationship/memory out of your life and not going back..and how he relates that to them both 'on the run' might be him saying the burning bridge is catching up to them and they are trying to fight it, but they can't keep running away bc it's inevidable. this song is about two people who both care about each other despite differences and knowing it just wont work. | |

| i love this song its very romantic and sincere. i dont think this is what the song is talking about, but when i hear it i think of hurricane katrina. like "i woke up this morning to a blood red sky" theres some little rhyme, red sky and morning sailor take warning so like predicting bad weather. then "we're on the run" fleeing the town, "We got nowhere to go and no home that's left The water is rising on a river turning red It all might be okay or we might be dead" "The walls are shaking, I hear them sound the alarm Glass is breaking so let go of my arm Grab your bags and a picture of where we met All that we'll leave behind and all that's left" "A pool is running for miles on the concrete ground We're eight feet deep and the rain is still coming down The TV's playing it all out of town" honestly i do not think the purpose of the song talking about some natural disaster (katrina) but i think its intersting that it somehow parallels with it. anyone agree? | |

| Oh boo I didn't know he said what it was actually about, I like my version of what it could be about better! Well this evening I was thinking about how there was "too much water under the bridge" between a certain person and I, and this song happened to come on, and I thought the metaphor fit well with it! Like there is so much history between them, hence so much "water", but that it's worth it because they're both still holding on to each other... | |

| Someone with common sense, thanks Jaq. This song is about a couple and their experience in losing everything but eachother and the love they have for one another-during Katrina. Mat says this at all of his concerts | |

| this song is so powerful...I saw him in concert as well when he told us he wrote the song about Hurricane Katrina. I've been down to volunteer in the area and just seeing all of the people who are still living in trailers and the destruction that still covers the area...I can just picture people clinging to each other as the storm blows away everything they own. | |

| Mat says in his concerts that this song was about his two friends escaping from Hurrican Katrina. Before I knew this I always thought the song was pretty inspiring, and was afraid knowing would somehow make it lose its effect for me. The opposite became true, though. It's the greatest imagery for true love; two people who literally have nothing but each other. Mat paints the picture amazingly well using a lot of loose images. You can really empathize with those people who were suddenly faced with losing their entire lives. When all that matters is your life, and the lives close to you. He takes you step by step through the hurricane's landfall, but I particularly love the statement he makes about love. "I know I love you, if that's all we can take" because in this particular case it really is all they can take with them. When love is all you've got it becomes something concrete, something you really can hang onto, the only thing worth hanging onto in the end. | |

| amyamyamya, that's a very good interpretation. I heard it on Grey's as well. A lot of the show's songs catch my ear. Given Mat's genre of music, I think this may be about faith; and (like as said above) love is the main theme. The opening lines tell of an apocalyptic scene. If it was the end of the world--THE day--and all anyone can do is run from destruction, this person he's talking to will be all that matters. Companionship is key. There is no time, and if nothing is certain, this pure devotion speaks truth from the heart. It's as if he's saying, "You're it. You're my life. Like I said, always until the end. Stay with me, because I'll stay with you." Love is the ultimate sacrifice, and his faith in love and in that person will get them through. -HBG | |

| Weird, because the first time I heard this song, I immediately thought of Hurricane Katrina, with it's references to shaking walls, rain, and water...then I had to come onto this site to see what it really meant. | |

| when i heard this song i immediately didnt over-think the lyrics for a deeper meaning...just like jtosa15 said, its about the hurricane and how as long as they have each other and their love that's all they need and their personal possesions arent as important as having each other, duh people! | |
