| the lyrics for this song are totally wrong! the second verse is: i'm dizzy from the shopping mall i searched for joy but i bought it all it doesn't help the hunger pains and thirst i'd have to drown first to satiate And the end of the song goes: How come everything I think I need always comes with batteries Also, regarding the imagery for the verse about autumn: I don't understand its relevance to the song. Autumn could represent the next stage (it comes after summer). To be honest, I always thought the lyrics were "fog around the glass of your summer HOUSE," but after listening to it again I think the word is heart. But I think the intention is obvious. | |

| The human condition. Our brains are perfectly evolved to find the problem and fix it. When we have no problems, it will just make them up. We can't ever be happy. We can only try to be. | |

| This song is about depression, and it's not solved by finding Jesus (for the dude commenting before me). Even those of us who are successful, attractive, rich, and well liked can feel lonely and depressed. We can have loving family and friends and significant others, but without the decision to be happy, you won't be. I feel this way right now...I have success, a loving family, opposite sex, and even a guitar :) The only thing missing is happiness with myself. And although everyone else around me may think that I have it made, I'm not satisfied. Many times, I believe, an ambitious person reaches a plateau after attaining a goal, and sinks into a depression before focusing on the next goal. I think Mayer thinks the same thing--he's reached his dream of money, women to choose from, popularity, and a sense of personal achievement, but now what? It's a lot of pressure. | |

| 1) I think it's interesting what TokenwithDave said. I certainly can't argue with him over the meaning of the song if he said that's what John said it means. But I'll be very fast to argue at least for two meanings of the song, then. Because there's some lines that just DON'T fit with that latter interpretation, but fit perfectly with the obvious one of not being satisfied (i.e. the reference to loneliness, dissatisfaction with material goods: shopping mall reference, battery reference, checklist). 2) Does anybody have any insight on the meaning behind the autumn verse? I think it's BEAUTIFUL imagery - one of my favorite John Mayer lines, but I don't know what the imagery stands for. And yea, I don't know what the heck stacilovesdmb was talking about. The line is DEFINATELY "it walks in where it left you last". Where the heck did she get evascenciate from? Oh well. It's ok. No big deal. 3) A lot of people will disagree with me on this (as they already have expresses their opposition). I'm sure John Mayer wasn't writing this song with Christ in mind. But iit's very striking, indeed, that every Christian, without even verbal communication, can look each other in the eye after hearing these lyrics and know exactly why John feels this way. There are plenty of people who will gladly and loudly voice their opposition, but does anyone find it intriguing that Christians (ones who are serious), uniformly can express utter content? Even on the posts for this song, out of a total of 14 posts, there are 3 who say that Jesus fills one's contentment, 4 who don't address it either way and SEVEN who say their lives aren't or never will be satisfied, even though they may have all sorts of materials, skills, blessings, etc (I figured I had the license to include the "lol@jesus" comment in that stat). Does anyone begin to become intrigued when they realize that every person who clings to Christ can claim utter content? I can tell you right now, strip me of my materials, my friends, my blessings, but let me keep my Bible, and I will be content. In fact, sometimes I get upset at how materials and other things get in the way. We Christians may be stereotyped as unintellectual, emotionally-dependent fools. But are we content? YES. So those of you who realize you're not content, have you ever even sought Jesus? SINCERELY? Before you are ready to claim us as a load of crap, prove it with your own experience first. | |

| The first time i listened to this song i thought the same thing as riotrrrlraven... Just yesterday tho, i saw him in concert and he explained the meaning to this song.... he basically said the song is about having a good life, nothing to complain about... so good that something must be wrong... he must be missing something because things shoould not be this good... "your just sitting around thinking this is to good, what am i missing..."(Johns words) I hate to say this, im a diehard DMB fan but last night, John put on a better performance than all the DMB concerts i have been to. | |

| during the Renaissance there was a certain Frenchman named Pascal who was known as a mathmatician, a philospher and an inventor. He was also a Christian, and he proposed that every person had a "God shaped hole' inside of them that they needed to fill. I do not think that John Mayer wrote this song about Jesus, but it certainly does reflect the way everyone feels, and if a person has tried everything to fill in that void in their life and they are still coming up empty, maybe it is because they need to fill that 'God shaped hole' with God. It seems obvious that if John Mayer feels this way, there is no way any of us can have enough money or prestige or talent to get past this feeling. Jesus is the answer to this question, if you are curious, check out http://www.needhim.org/g/. It can't hurt just to look at it. I am a Christian and I can tell you, John Mayer may not realize it, but he is singing about his own need for Jesus. | |

| Trevors10: Keep in mind there are alt. lyrics to this song. As for Autumn, I think JM is alluding to the "fall" as in both the season and the emotion drop off referenced in the rest of the song. He mentions fog because fog is a weather condition commonly found during the summer months. What else happens in the summer? Perhaps a summer fling/romance. So in essentially you get jaded in the summer by and forget what you're really looking for. Fog rolls in, things are unclear, then fall comes. | |

| 'something's missing' basically defines my loneliness and inability to find satisfaction in my life for some unknown reason. i've got everything i need, but emotionally something's still missing. i'm not completely alone in this world because i've got friends that care and family that's here for me, but there's still something more that i want. my favorite line from this song is "i wish there was an over the counter test for loneliness." it reminds me of how much i wish someone could just tell me what's wrong with me, or just tell me what it is i want so that i could cure myself of this loneliness... | |

| I'm not a big fan of John Mayer, but this song is quite good. I'm sure a lot of people can relate to it, but it still suprises me that more people don't see 'major dissatisfaction' coming up in their lives and wonder beforehand if all the money, friends and respect in the world can fill that hole. I'm with some of the other guys who've posted in believing that this life is the 'support act' before the greatest band in the world, so to speak, and will be proud to attest, yet again, to finding total fulfilment in my Christian faith. However, I know that most of the posts might sound kinda 'boasty', although I'm sure they're not meant to, and I'd like to say how good it is that there haven't been too many 'flame' type replies to these Christian-oriented posts. So yea, great song, good commenting. And if more after me comment on how God has changed their lives, please be kind/understanding to them/us :) | |

| I agree with everyone about having "something missing." I used to feel EXACTLY how John describes, until I met Jesus. He filled my soul in a way that nothing the song suggests, like money, family, or friends could. It's a beautiful song that so many people can relate too because we're all ironically lonely together. | |

| the word where the question marks are is evascenciate which is a tense of the word "evanescence" which means to dissapear. just a little FYI. I also think that the thing missing is jesus because that's just what the meaning says to me. I love this song though and john says it's the second best song he's ever written next to 3x5. awesome song | |

| I think this song is completely satirical. This song makes me laugh out loud everything it comes on! It's all about insecurity. A sense of security is what he's missing. Instead of realizing that he's insecure, he keeps thinking he forgot to bring something. Pure comedy! | |
