I usually don't transcribe rhythms but in this case, it's a "picked" one,
and the bass notes are important. For each diagonal chord, make a slow down stroke
and quick up stroke (you repeat the high notes).

I thought the line was "Don't for a minute CHANGE this place you're in?" That makes the most sense to me too... Anyway, this song is my favorite on Continuum. I can totally relate to it, being a senior in high school. I think it's kind of the perspective he had in mind when he wrote this ... Graduating and leaving home for college or work or whatever.

I first listened to this CD while I was driving in the car... and it INSTANTLY made me ball my eyes out. Every line pulled at my heart a little more than the last. my favorite is the conversation he has with his dad, bassically saying "you think your old??? I WISH i was your age". Bassically the "train" is life... you can't stop it, or get off, you can only appreciate the ride. And then in the midst of my hard cry (and I mean HARD). I hear the line "you don't miss a thing so you cry when you're driving away in the dark". Which was pretty much exactly what I was doing... This song is beautiful, and perfectly worded. It gets the messag across to me and apperentally to everyone else here too.

This song is amazing. Can't wait to get continuum. I beleive this song to simply be about worrying about growing old. He is so used to the way of life of being young, that he doesnt think he can handle getting older. He wishes that he could stop himself from aging (to stop this train of life he is on) but he knows he cannot, and will eventually arrive at his destination, the future is enevitable, you cannot stop yourself from growing old, its a part of life.

in the song I DL from limewire he sings, "dont for a minute lose the place your in." I'm buying this cd this weekend for sure it will be the first cd I've bought in years. It's about time someone starts signing about deep meaningful songs with all the trash thats out their now. TY John Mayer.

Same here, Joanne of mine. I WANT to go to college and grow up. But at the same time I'm scared to death to leave the nice comfortable life that I have now. What if my life in the future never matches up to my hopes and dreams? Change is a scary thing.

aww, john is so cute (in response to what wokeupinacar posted). this song is amazing. the way i look at it is this: life moves fast. sometimes you feel like it's moving too fast and you just wish you could hit the pause button. growing up is scary and a lot of changes come with it, and sometimes you just want to stay where you are. but the "had a talk with my old man" stanza suggests that when you're older, you'll realize how much you learn and how much experience you get in the process of growing up. so don't quit, just live your life and enjoy it. be happy where you are. i also love the end of this song when his voice gets higher...it makes me wanna cry. i'm obsessed with continuum right now :)

hey, great start but there were a few mistakes...i actually happened to be one of the 140 ppl that got to view some of his material early at the Hotel Cafe here in Cali. here is what i heard first hand. btw this song is awesome! no i'm not color blind i know the world is black and white try to keep an opened mind i just can't sleep on this tonight stop this train i want to get off and go home again i can't take the speed it's moving in i know i can but honestly won't someone stop this train don't know how else to say it, don't want to see my parents go one generation's left for me from finding life out on my own come on stop this train i want to get off and go home again i can't take this speed it's moving in i know i can but honestly won't someone stop this train so afraid of getting older i'm only good at being young so i play the numbers game to find away to say that life has just begun had a talk with my old man said help me understand he said turn 68, you'll renegotiate don't stop this train don't follow it moves the place you're in i don't think i could ever understand i tried my hand john, honestly we'll never stop this train once in a while when it's good it'll feel like it should and they're all still around and you're still safe and sound and you don't miss a thing so you cry when you're driving away in the dark. singing stop this train i want to get off and go home again i can't take this speed it's moving in i know i can but now i see we'll never stop this train

Greaaat song, the album is so good. I think that on the album version he says "Don't for a minute chase this place you're in" rather than "Don't follow it moves the place you're in"

I feel the song speaks about one's fears of not only growing up, but about its inevitability. Life steams forward just like a train, and for those of us that live our daily lives, we simply can't go back to a certain point in time, and there's no getting off. When he speaks of the conversation with his father, it is here he learns that NOT changing life is the best way to experience it.

When I first heard this song, it was like love at first site. When I turned 18, I stood home from school that day crying and listening to this song. Its just that very end of the song: "once in a while when it's good it'll feel like it should and they're all still around and you're still safe and sound and you don't miss a thing so you cry when you're driving away in the dark." It always gets to me... Its really a nice song...and some what makes me feel a little better about going on with life. Glad to know I am not the only one that feels that way...:-)

heres what john said about this song on 98.7.. "i have no idea how i'm going to play this live, because it's definitely the most emotionally confrontational song for me....ya know, time is moving forward, all the time, and we know that, but..its kind of like running out of a continually burning hallway- and you can't go back and get your stuff. and all i wanna do is yell, 'i wanna go get my stuff!', but people are going, 'you can't! keep running!!'. and this fireball's coming up behind you, well it's not exactly as indiana jones as that, but it feels like that sometimes... so this is a song begging to go back and uhh, it's called 'stop this train'"..... :)

Even though I;m still a teen, I can SO relate to this one! One of my favorites on here!!! Sometimes I wish I could go back to when i was a little kid and had no responsibility, no stress, and no worries.I just had fun. and knowing that I'll never be a little kid again scares me b/c I'm just hitting reality.

This was tear-jerker No.3 for me. Especially the part where he says "Don't know how else to say it, don't want to see my parents go".I feel that way for my parents, especially mom. I don't know what life would be like without her. I don't want to know. John also says, "so afraid of getting older i'm only good at being young". I know how he feels. I'm so scared of being away from my mom, staying in one job for the rest of your life, getting laid off from that job, getting married, having kids, becoming the same parent my dad is or being less than what a great mom my mom is, fights with my kids...ALL THAT STUFF SCARES THE CRAP OUT OF ME. I wish I could just go back to the time dad and I were ok, and I was great in school and my cousins were here and my mom was happy and young... We're all afraid of getting older. I know I am.

"one generation's length away from fighting life out on my own"...it is the one line that sums up what I constantly feel. I feel that I've finally reached that point of accepting my life the way it is, and loving the way it is, but at the same time I cannot accept the eventuality of what my life would be like without my parents. It's beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time, to finally realize the unconditional love my parents have for me, and to wonder if I could ever have that capacity to do the same...I'm staying on this train.
