Contrary to once popular belief, this song is not about marijuana. It is actually about a girl who takes up witchcraft. Eventually, she wants to get out of it and in an effort to do so, she confesses to her father, who not only doesn't forgive Mary Jane, but buries her alive. That's why she haunts the forest.

Beware my friends, as you pass by As you are now so once was I As I am now so you must be Prepare my friends to follow me ... this is an epitaph...i used to date a chick who claimed to know the location of a "witches's grave"...we drove for 3 hrs to a cemetery in Illinois( big hill cemetery)...there was a thombstone dated 1868 and was shaped like a coffin...i was thinking that this shit was pretty cool than i saw the epitaph and about shit my pants...it just warns people to prepare for deth cause its coming sooner or later... check out this link for other variations http://www.alsirat.com/epitaphs/passing.html

ok... possibly... I think it's pretty ambigous though... Mary Jane is an euphemism for marijuana Its basically about marijuana induced neurosis and lung cancer
