Mercury Rev - "The Dark Is Rising"

From the album "All Is Dream"

I noticed that there were no tabs for the mighty Rev on this
site, so i have decided to rectify this sorry situation. I
really don't care if you like this tab or not, so please
don't bother to e-mail me about it or rate the tab. Thank you.

Intro - C / Gm / Bb / F x2

Verse 1:

C G
I dreamed of you on my farm
F
I dreamed of you in my arms
C
But dreams are always wrong
G
I never dreamed I'd hurt you
F
I never dreamed I'd lose you
C
In my dreams I'm always strong

F C
But now the creek is rising
F C
And all my bridges burned

(C) G
I always dreamed of big crowds
F
Plumes of smoke and high clouds
C
But dreams don't last for long

Repeat intro chords twice

Verse 2 (same chords as first verse)

I have my suspicions
When the stars are in position
All will be revealed
But I know that until then
Unless the stars surrender
All will be concealed

And now the snow is falling
And all my fences torn

I know you need someone
And I can hear someone
Somewhere in this song

Repeat intro chords twice

Verse 3 (same chords as first verse except where noted)

I dreamed that I was walking
And the two of us were talking
Of all life's mystery
The words that flow between friends
Winding streams without end
I wanted you to see

F C
But it can seem surprising
F C
When you find yourself alone
F C
And now the dark is rising
F C
And a brand new moon is born

I always dreamed I'd love you
I never dreamed I'd lose you
In my dreams I'm always strong.

Finish on C

The intro bit sounds best (to me) if you play the following chords;

C at the eighth fret (E shape)
Gm at the tenth fret (Am shape)
Bb at the sixth fret (E shape)
F at the eighth fret (A shape)

For the rest of the song use these chord shapes:

C - X32010
G - 320003
F - 133211

And that's your lot.

Yeah, i can relate to this song aswell, i never really listened to the lyrics, i thought they were nonsense lyrics after i heard "I dreamed of you on my farm" but wow, these are really good. Anyway, i was with my girlfriend for almost 7 months, and for a long time we werent together, and i was in love with her and i really wanted to spend my life with her... and i still do, but i hurt her pretty bad, and i really didnt mean to, :( i didnt. And we used to talk about sitting together, with her in my arms, watching the snow fall, but, we never got to :(. And over christmas i wished she was with me so much. "And now the snow is falling"

I could relate to this song when i thought i had lost someone i really care about without knowing what had gone wrong. "I have my suspicions When the stars are in position All will be revealed" The last thing i wanted to do was hurt them or make them unhappy but i did that and it made me feel really awful. Although she was gone i always had some hope that it wasnt over and i love the sense of optomism in this song with the lines: "I know you need someone And I can hear someone Somewhere in this song" These lines are so important to me because i always had the feeling that i would get another chance and we would be together. I always dreamt i'd love you, i never dreamed i'd lose you, in my dreams i'm always strong

I remember for my GCSE drama piece...i got my group to have this song at the end of the play...worked really well, our play was about a man driven to extreme stress, and ends up killing his wife...tis was the last scene where he kills her

Susan Cooper wrote a young adult fantasy series called "The Dark is Rising" - for a long time, I thought the series and this song sharing a title was just a coincidence, but looking at the lyrics, I think Mercury Rev did take inspiration from the eponymous second book in the series. Some of the images are reminiscent of the book, particularly the farm, the creek rising, the stars, the snow falling, "this song", winding streams. All of these play a major role in the book, which features the power of nature as a theme. The phrase "The Dark is Rising" is an unusual title, both for a song and for a book series, so I think there's probably a connection. But there's no love story in the book. If Mercury Rev was thinking of a particular relationship in the books and not just using the images, I would say it's about Will, the hero, and his alienation from his large and loving family as he learns of his secret quest and destiny. But I think it's more likely that Mercury Rev used a very beautiful book to write a very beautiful song about a very beautiful love story.

This will always be my favourite song... it reminds me of the woman I love, who sadly lives quite a distance away... :( It also reminds her of me, because I introduced her to Rev when I sent her a Rev compilation CD... I love this song, it can be so... I don't know how to describe it, really. Other than amazing and perfect. I have to listen to it now.

This song epitomises dramatic effect in music to the extreme. Powerful for many, i've spoken to many people (online comments inclusive) who relate the song to lost love, or regrets in love. Having seen this song performed live, in a cosy club, up front!!, Its as momentus as an eclipse when you're sharing the silent moment, in a crowd of strangers, all bonding over one song/memory/person. (hope that makes sense)

This song has a sort of feeling not unlike meeting that one true love who dumped you later in the afterlife and just sort of walking along a creek talking about what happened in your lives after you parted ways.

Reminds me of a storybook tale, only the ending is not the perfect happiness that was envisioned. Amidst the dreams of grandeur - "big crowds, plooms of smoke and high clouds" - and dreams of simplicity - "I dreamed that I was walking, and the two of us were talking" - the real life vision is lost. There is a sense of both loneliness and optimism in the song which I completely relate to. Reminds me of the "perfect" girl I was with that I slowly let slip away because I wanted to be "perfect" with her, instead of being me, with all my weaknesses as well as strengths. And I never dreamed I'd lose her either, but am left wondering about her still. This song is amazing.
