	I'm not sure about this...but when I listen to this song I relate it to Dante's Inferno..an epic description of hell. The lowest level of hell is a lake in which people are frozen and tourtured endlessly, for eternity. James Hetfield seems to be a well read guy so it could be possible...

	This song has alot of ambiguous meaning to different people. However, I think the band wrote it from the state of mind of someone literally being trapped under ice. I only think this because much of the album explores life-and-death situations that really have no escape.

	i think it's all about inner pain. you can't get out of your misery (trapped under ice, can't move at all) and no one really realizes your bad state of mind (screaming - can't hear my call)

	i agree whith what some others have said.the album Ride The Lightning( my favorite by the way) consists of a lot of tracks about being in a situation that you can't escape.death is the only way out.songs like Ride the Lightning, Fade to Black, and Escape are others from the same album that talk about these situations

	I don't remember where, but I recall it being about drowning as Debbie65 said. Another song about death on that album.
