This song is based on the Ernest Hemmingway novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, and it is about 5 soldiers left to defend a hill and are killed in an airstrike.

Another one of Metallica's best. This is like the first song that "Tallica showed signs of growth in their music. Let's face it, "Kill 'Em All" was a good album, but it followed what was expected of metal bands at the time. "Ride the Lightning" broke away from that and this song especially helped develope the Metallica style. This song, like all the old shit, is best played live. (i.e. S&M, Cunning Stunts) And as Metallica's first anti-war song, your know it will f'n blow you away.

I never knew wot this song meant but thanx u lot I like this song on the ride the lighnting but wen I heard it on S&M WOW it fukin brilliant I love the ideas and stories behind these songs there gr8. BY THE WAY METALLICA KICK ASS!!!!
