The song isn't as inspiring, or as technically impressive as the other songs on Master of Puppets, but the atmosphere more than makes up for it. This song will be 10X better if you read "The Call of Cthulu" by H.P. Lovecraft. The song itself sounds like it's going insane, and the repetitive nature of the song is meant to be oppressive and maddening. This song is just way too heavy for some people, and those are the people that don't like it. Definitely one of the heaviest(in the truest sense of the word) metal songs ever recorded.

Rebbal Ace - the lyrics are correct for the song, but the line you refer to (That is not dead which can eternal lie, / And with strange aeons death may die.) comes from another of Lovercraft's stories, "The Nameless City." I'm not sure what all books it's in, but I have a copy of "The Doom that came to Sarnath" with that story in it.

i think maybe this could be a song about god, or at least that's what i thought when i was reading this, Like god is the sleepy one and he's not doing anything while we (the children fight and kill each other in war)and he's telling him to do something finally, i don't know that what i got from that.

i love this song. i'm not very good at deciphering lyrics but i pictured the song being based on "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" movie. but it looks like i was totally way off, hahaha. the songs kickass.

Beans, how does this song, or any song with this lyrical tone for that, have anything to do with Shadow Over Innsmouth?

Although some say it's the worst song on the CD, I like this song, even the fucked up solo, it's like all hell is breaking loose.

its about not preparing our kids for the harshness of the world..."toy soldiers off to war"...as soon as you are 18, you can go off and kill people in a war...most 18 year olds these days are no where near ready for the "real world"...i think this is mostly about boys, not so much girls...with so many fathers absent, we have thirty year old "boys" walking around, never being taught how to be men...

what i was thinking when i first read these lyrics was that we are "hybrid children", as humans we all have good and evil in us, and the evil takes on a life of its own... im not saying thats what the songs about, just a thought I had

They say it is the worst song of the album, only because the rest of the songs rule so much. The music of the song isn't so good but the way james sings it it givves you the chills. It rocks also for sure.
