i think what this song means is that this guys really like this girl who is this high profile chick types....but he knows hes not the right guy for her.... I won't care for you like I'm really supposed to there are things I'll do that could really hurt you n her knows that even if he becomes someone big he still wont be the guy she needs.... In a big, big way I am really small I get off my feet But i'm still distant thats why he wants to get away from her ...hence Don't you just love goodbyes? well atleast thats what i got from the song..

Is the pronounciation of the band's name "Mew" like a cat, or as in Miu? Like the label Miu Miu and the pokémon Mew??

The song is about a man, withnessing his love getting robed & harrased by his friends. So he in the end decides to fight back and save her. Its simply about fighting for the one you love, even if she doesn't love you back. The parts about the stalking are the harrasing friends. They sing about the things they are gonna do to her, before we hear the man fight back. I've come to this by watching the music-video and reading the song countless of times. I still think I haven't gotten everything right, but..I think its something like that. Can't Mew just explain it themselfs :(?

i'm from denmark and i just wanna agree with madsanova. denmarks alarm number is 112 not 156, it's a cool song though and if you wanna hear some other cool danish indie rock/alternative you should try the bands Kashmir and The Raveonettes out

Nobody's posted about this song?! That's insane! This song is sooo unbelieveably wicked awesome. It's so calm, but still so energetic. The first time I heard Jonas break into "You can run away" my musical mind pissed its pants.

yeah I adore this dong, my fav mew song, but instead of ranting on how much we love it, could we maintain this site's actual purpose and explain the significance of the numbers 1 5 and 6?? because I'm drawing a blank.

It seems that 156 is a mystery that Mew are never going to reveal the meaning of...is it a door number? Phone number? What the hell is it? I've been through so many possibilities it's insane! Someone once told me it was the police code for burgulary...I think in Denmark? I'm not sure how accurate that it, but if it is true, it would make sense, especially when you see in the video Mew breaking into Callie's house!

a quick search on 156 on the net told me that scientists have calculated that the universe is 156 billion light-years wide. (http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/mystery_monday_040524.html) could this then signify a long distance. meaning that he feels really far away from Callie?

I find this song particularly interesting because of the chorus. Not only is it lyrically at odds with the rest of the song, which is relatively straightforward, but it is sung with a creepy, husky and low tone that doesn't match Mew's usual style at all. The rest of the song is, in contrast, all of the mood of the singer watching and pressing in. As several people have mentioned, it gives the impression of a stalker -- someone whose presence is not wanted and possibly dangerous. The voyeurism of "my boat... when the lights are low, I can watch you move" suggests a one-sided desire and there seems an underlying threat in the suggestion, "You can run away... but you should look back twice, just to be on the safe side." Even the more traditional love-lorn lyrics fit with the unrequited passion of the above. The words "you are just like an avalanche, cold as I might have guessed, but at least I am covered up for now" suggest the singer's felt a cold rejection and finally "I won't care for you, like I'm really supposed to, there are things I'll do, that could really hurt you" is still about the singer acting upon the girl (Callie?). This could be about resignation and rationalization in the face of her coldness or the realization that he really is a creepy, potentially dangerous stalker. But all this is why I find the chorus so important to the ultimate meaning of the song. Mew has a tendency to do various versions of their songs, some of them quite mutated, but I've found their delivery of the chorus constant. Even in concert there's that odd, breathy voice calling to "Callie," with each chorus, but this time it's Callie who has the desire: Callie, if you really want me to I can always get you down If you got the money for me Callie, in the summer rain You will be kept dry you see If you got the money for me In the end, this sounds like two fucked up people in some sort of mutual relationship. The singer is a bit sick in the mind, and acknowledges that he's dangerous, but Callie (partly, at least) desires that danger. She might just be a girl who likes to be hurt or it may be a more complex relationship, one literally involving money and something more than the exchange of twisted psychological hang-ups. I have absolutely no theories on the title. Maybe it's the money?

I've been digging around on the net, and it appears that '156' is the female version of '666' - Kind've appropriate to the song, really :) Of course, that's "According to the net" - so not sure how much truth that holds ;)

I've no idea what this song means. I still love it. :) I think that maybe its saying that he loves her so much, it hurts him to be close, and yet so far away from her.

Okay so Im glad that NO ONE HAS TRIED TO EXPLAIN THE MEANING OF THIS SONG. except for random monkey Its obvious though...a guy is obsessed with a girl and he watched her from his boat, I mean hello...can we stay stalker...if you go the the Mew website you can watch their music video for this song..which makes the whole song meaning alot more confusing..because they burn down her house in the video.. anyways..someone please try to find the meaing of this song. Im lost.

i think 156 is the code for the fire brigade in denmark as in the video it shows them setting fire to callies house. i saw Mew last night and met Jonas but as he is so shy i didnt have the guts to ask him what 156 meant ... maybe next time!! Mew are amazing.

This song is about a boy, he is watching a girl, but the girl doesn´t know that, and the girl is too good for the boy. Well, honestly I really don´t know what this song is about.

It is about a relationship were she done him great wrong, so he spies on her, wants her to pay back in some way. and they made the song double-edged, you could as well take it as she was in great monetary debt to him, this is the thing about burglary in the song, 156 is the police code in Denmark yes. (like blink-182) a real mafia thing. she has to pay him to keep her dry, he could hurt her aso. "Making amends for distant wrong Sincere You can run away leave your books behind you but you should look back twice just to be on the safe side" just my cents

wow 156 billion lightyears is a really really friggen big place -- though i thought the universe was an indefinite size, that was the point of calling it the universe, for everything, indefinite, and immeasurable. but all science aside, and without looking too much into it, it sounds like its about dealing drugs to this Callie girl: Callie if your really want me to I can always get you down If you got the money for me Callie in the summerrain You will be kept dry you see If you got the money for me That more or less tells that something is being sold, whether its drugs or sex or what-have-you. Maybe Callie actually isnt a person, just a name theyve given to those who buy. Just ideas, and it seems like theres much more to the song than that. i really dont think that 156 has anything to do with light years.

I'm from Denmark.. 156 is not an alarm-number, that's 112! I don't know what 156 is either.. :] But it's a good song..
