| I think when aaron says: "(I drank a thimble full of fire?)I'm not ever coming back" The thimble full of fire would be hellfire and possibly a representation of his sins. He's sinned and seen what hell is like and he never wants to go back. | |

| No I'm pretty sure a thimble full of fire would be a shot glass full of hard liquor, considering he mentions mildew on his glass earlier. Of course we don't even know if that is the lyrics for sure yet. I kind of like your interpretation though, a thimble full of fire would be such a small volume, but even the smallest taste of hell would be enough to change his life. I can't pass judgement til we get the lyrics though. | |

| what does mildew have to do with spirits? imo. seeing as the whole song seems to be about his lust/escaping sin (lusters are messes of men?) it would make sense that he has had a taste of hell and wont ever go back, oh my god! and hes watching every preconception he had disappear. or something like that :p | |

| "I do not exist," we faithfully insist sailing in our separate ships, and in each tiny caravel - tiring of trying, there's a necessary dying like the horseshoe crab in its proper season sheds its shell such distance from our friends, like a scratch across a lens, made everything look wrong from anywhere we stood and our paper blew away before we'd left the boy so half-blind we wrote these songs on sheets of salty wood you caught me making eyes at the other boatmen's wives and heard me laughing louder at the jokes told by their daughters I'd set my course for land, but you well understand it takes a steady hand to navigate adulterous waters the proppeller's spinning blades held acquaintance with the waves as there's mistakes I've made no rowing could outrun the cloth low on the mast like to say Ive got no past but I'm nonetheless the librarian and secretary's son with tarnish on my brass and mildew on my glass I'd never want someone so crass as to want someone like me but a few leagues off the shore, I bit a flashing lure and I assure you, it was not what it expected it to be! I still taste its kiss, that dull hook in my lip is a memory as useless as a rod without a reel to an anchor-ever-dropped-seasick-yet-still-docked captain spotted napping with his first mate at the wheel floating forgetfully along, with no need to be strong. we keep our confessions long and when we pray we keep it short I drank a thimbleful of fire and I'm not ever going back Oh, my G-d! "I do not exist," we faithfully insist while watching sink the heavy ship of everything we knew if ever you come near I'll hold up high a mirror Lord, I could never show you anything as beautiful as you | |

| it's out of reverence. Aaron didn't always do it, cause it's not like that on their other albums, but he started to do it on the band's bulletin board lately. i think its similar to what Hebrews used to do when they were writing the name of God (Yaweh). They would never write the vowels in case they messed them up or something, so they always wrote YWH. it's not necessary persay, but if it helps him to be closer to God I admire him for it. | |

| It deff doesn't make him closer to God. But I think it makes him think about everytime he writes God's name. I'm guessing also because everyone throws around the word god so much that when he writes it he doesn't want to make people think he saying "oh my god" like highschool girls say when they find out who's sleeping with who. he wants to make sure people know he's crying out to God. also, it's deff adultress waters. the two lines before that are about looking at other boatmans wives, and laughing at jokes by their daughters. it's in context to be adultress, plus the lyrics say that. I'm guessing because there is like storm waters, and calm waters he just put it in like when he's into adultress waters he needs to make sure he's sure of every move and every turn. Also with the fire, I love the idea about the taste of hell. but initially I was thinking like as a relationship with God. So I thought he tasted God's love and never wanted to go back from that. got adicted to that fire (but that fire being good) I'm not Aaron so I don't know what he meant by anything but I love how much it makes you think. -Isaac | |

| --"Like a horseshoe crab in it's proper sea can shed it's shell" a Horseshoe crab goes to the same place to molt every year. --"I bit a flashing lure" --"The anchor ever dropped sea-sick but still docked" --"boatman's wives" --"daughters" --"The perpeller spitting flames it held aquaintence with the waves" --"We'll be brave and keep it short" --"floating forgetfully aloft" --"hold up high and dear" --"O my God!" the perpeller line I''m not sure about and there are a few other things wrong, and you're missing the line before "I'm not ever coming back", I think it says something about a fire and a thimble. Anyway I love this song, and I'll give it a full comment when I get the real lyrics, but I believe this is him in search of faith. | |
