| I think this song might be about taking chances to live a different way but not always getting what you want. I think this guy wanted this girl to feel the same way about him entirely, and isn't sure if she does and is just hoping for the best. I'm probably wrong... but this song is so amazing. | |

| ...of course there's another version. hence a few of the above comments. anyway i think it's about living in spite of the fact that she's turned away from him. the last line may be dreaming? sleeping today so i can wake in your arms tonight, like, wake to a dream... sort of thing. maybe the living in spite (upon reflection) is his implication that she feels something for him or something but turns away from it, lives in spite of those feelings and tears him apart. i dunno. | |

| I don't know if there's another version, But thee acoustic version is great. This song is really really good. I especially enjoy when he says "I'm sleeping today so I can wake in your arms tonight". I know what it's like to not want to go to bed because i'm with someone that is so special to me. And yet I can hate them so much at the same time because.. well, i guess because i'm frustrated by the lack of desire from the other end. Oh well, my two cents. Always free. | |

| I think this is about a guy who doesn't know how to deal with a girl. He is really frustrated with her, and he's trying to figure her out, but he can't and it leads to those petty fights. But, I don't understand how living in spite factors in. | |

| I love both versions of this song. I perform the acoustic version at open mic nights. To me, "tearing pictures off the wall" indicates the demise of a relationship. Taking "the fall from truth" so that "everyone could see" means that his SO (significant other) resorted to telling lies in order to distance herself (or himself perhaps) from him. He can't do anything to control what she is saying, but he can try to "climb out these trenches I've dug" which are negative thoughts bringing him down into such a depression that he "can't see underground", or can't look at things with a clear focus because of the depression. He can't understand what it's like to be "living in spite" like his ex is, with such a bitter feeling towards her former lover, but he realizes that in five years, their relationship will probably be a small part of his life. Still now, he looks forward to sleep because he can dream about her. | |
