| This song is about the Teen Idles guitarist, Geordie Grindle. The Idles broke up because of Grindle's girlfriend, a Christian who didn't like the band. Grindle, likewise, lost interest in the Teen Idles, and they disbanded. | |

| Why do you have to be part of a certain religion to be part of a loving community? Why can't the people of the religion just love everybody? Sounds like segregation to me. | |

| at first i would have agreed with Mama Duck, that it was attacking Christianity without reason, but I just read an interview with Ian Mackaye in which he explained "Filler" as a song about Geordie, and his life revolving around a girl, and not an attack on Christianity. | |

| Well, this person Ian is singing about is obviously an idiot. You being friends with that person makes you equally fucking stupid. | |

| To mama duck, most religious people use religion to persecute especially the nonreligious since they're mission from from 'god' is to 'cleanse the nation' in the words of BR, but also to pray and pray and pray and fuck everything away from us and fuck our lives up and be as selfish as possible because 'god' told them to. Done ranting. I think the same as joshwasinger. | |

| mama duck, i kind of inturpret the song differently, he picked up a bible and stoped acting like himself, say with the girl, someone picked up a girl and tryed to impress her and look cool, and he just wants these people to be themselves, i really dont think he is puting down religion though | |

| Interesting. I didn't know the story about Geordie. However, I always figured the song to be more about something like that rather than just an attack on religion. I always imagined a situation where a guy meets a religious girl and stops hanging out with his old friends. Many of them may even be straight edge, so even though they may not be Christian, they are still trying to live a clean life. So, they feel betrayed, because this guy is in effect saying they aren't good enough for him anymore. | |

| what exactly is wrong with religion? Ok, maybe some people use it as excuse to persecute other people, but that's not everyone!! Is there really anything wrong with wanting to have a community that supports you and offers you unconditional love, no matter what? Maybe if Ian Mckay picked up a bible himself, he would see that it contains a loving message. BY saying that people who are relgious are idiots, he is as bad as a zealot who says that those without faith are evil. Hypocrisy. | |

| well that's what Christianity teaches...love your neighbor, love your enemy...but you're right X14, some people who claim to be Christian don't follow the teachings which is hypocritical...not all though | |
