its about staight edge the first verse are the arguments ppl use too justify smoking but could be about any substance use I guess and MacKaye's blunt rebuttal. the second verse is criticisms of straight edge's promotion of "clean" living and what it actually achieves and ppl's views of themselves and others, followed again by MacKaye. "IN my Eyes" is employed quite creativly to refer not only to the singer's point of view but also the image of ciggarette smoke getting in his eyes. In a way I guess this song addresses ppl who like minor threat's music but don't agree with the politics of clean living and straight edge (like me).

This song is exactly whats going on with me, all of a sudden my "friends" started drinking and smoking a lot, just to be cool and stuff, and they know I think they look stupid and stuff. especially the First verse You tell me you like the taste You just need an excuse You tell me it calms your nerves You just think it looks cool You tell me you want to be different You just change for the same You tell me it's only natural You just need the proof Did you fucking get it?
