Artist: Missy Higgins
Album: The Sound of White (2004)
Song: The Sound of White
Tuning: Standard - EADGBE
***This song is quite piano based but uses guitar part way into it. Instead of starting
with piano, just pick the chords in any progression that suits the tempo etc and it
sounds fine.
Chords used:
C - 332010
Cadd9 - 032033
D - 000232
D* - 000233
Em - 022000
G - 320033
Intro: (Picking)
G D C D* D
G D C D* D
VERSE 1: (Picking)
G D C D* D
Like a freeze dried rose
You will never be
What you were, what you were
To me in memory
G D C D* D
But if I listen to the dark
You'll embrace me like a star
Envelope me
Envelope me
PRE-CHORUS:
G D C D* D
If things get real for me down here
Promise to take me to before you went away
If only for a day
G D Cadd9 C D
If things get real for me down here
Promise to take me back to the tune we played
Before you went away
CHORUS:
G D C D
And if I listen to the sound of white
Sometimes I hear your smile, and breathe your light
Yeah if I listen to the sound of white
VERSE 2:
G D C D* D
You're my mystery, one mystery
My mystery, one mystery
G D C D* D
My silence solidifies
Til that hollow void
Erases you, erases you
Til I can't feel at all
G D C D* D
But if I never feel again
At least that nothingness will end
The painful dream
Of you and me
PRE-CHORUS: (x1)
CHORUS:
And if I listen to the sound of white
Sometimes I hear your smile, and breathe your light
Yeah if I listen to the sound of white
Sometimes I hear your smile and breathe your light
And if I listen to the sound of white
BRIDGE:
Em C G D
I knelt before
Some stranger's face
Well I never had the courage
Or belief to trust this place
Em C G D (pause on the D note)
And I dropped my head
Cos it felt like lead
And I'm sure I felt
Your fingers through my hair
(Pick the notes C and D in this short break)
CHORUS:
And if I listen to the sound of white
Sometimes I hear your smile, and breathe your light
Yeah if I listen to the sound of white
Sometimes I hear your smile, and breathe your light
And if I listen to the sound of white
The sound of white
The sound of white
The sound of white
END!
That's probably one of the easiest songs that I've ever heard, but still it's a
killer.... Aussie artists : simple but bloody fantastic!

| this song was written about missys sister, who died. 'the sound of white' is a reference to 'white noise'. listening to the sound of white could be like listening to silence, she hears the smile and breathes the light. 'and if i never feel again at least the nothingness will end the painful dreams of you and me' painful dreams ie: remembering the moments together, knowing that will never happen again. this is definately about missys sister though. | |

| It's quite possibly about a death of a loved one, but for me it's about the end of a close relationship/even friendship. That's how I relate to it. I had a very close friend, things got intimate, and I wanted her so bad. Even when I knew nothing could happen, I would dream and dream. Hopelessly. So for me its about something I cant have, but have had before. And it just won't get out of the mind. | |

| this song is simply divine.. and what i loved was how at her concert in adelaide everyone was cheering so loudly when she introduced it that she had to sing a different one and come back because obviously it means alot to her and causes her tonnes of emotion.. and the second time around, the crowd was dead silent.. *shivers* she is amazing. | |

| When I saw that there were only 9 comments on this song I was devastated because I thought that they would just be pointless comments about nothing, but these have been useful. I think it is about someone that has passed away, but one line has proven hard to interpret for me: "My silence solidifies, until that hollow void erases you, erases you so I can't feel at all. But if I never feel again, at least that nothingness will end the painful dream, of you and me..." It's always been my favourite line, but if this song is about a person who passed away and not a relationship which has ended (which was my initial interpretation) then what is it about? The best idea I have is that the girl hasn't spoken enough about it (My silence solidifies) and she hasn't received proper closure. So instead of moving on after the death she has simply tried to block it out of her memory (Until that hollow void erases you). She is only numbing her self from feelings of pain associated with the death (So I can't feel at all), she is willing to numb herself as long as she doesn't have to feel the pain of loss (At least that nothingness will end the painful dream of you and me) What do you think? | |

| i think this song is about someone who died that she has loved and she cant get over it. "If things get real for me down here, promise to take me to before you went away, if only for a day." This means if things are too tough on her down on earth, promise her to be there with her like before he went away. | |

| yeah, i thought of the white noise theory when i actually listened to the lyrics so midgets explanation makes complete sense to me. i love it when a whole bunch of people ar elike theorising over one song and then someone comes in who actually know the meaning and is like "well actually its about buying a hamster" or whatever... odd example... | |

| I love this song. It has so much depth and meaning to it. This is a heartfelt song about someone close to you that you love moving away from you, someone that is deeply trusted and missed. It also shows a sense of pain and resistance to move on. My favourite line is "Like a freeze-dried rose, you will never be, what you were, what you were to me in memory." It's saying nothing will be the same. I also love the line "But if I never fell again, at least that nothingness will end the painful dream, of you and me... " This once again shows that she is holding onto the dream of being together. This song is my favourite out of the cd and I can really relate to it :( | |

| I think this song is definately about the death of a loved one, and that while she still has the memories, of course it will never be the same. I think, in response to Enthused Punk's comment the "My silence solidifies, until that hollow void erases you, erases you so I can't feel at all. But if I never feel again, at least that nothingness will end the painful dream, of you and me..." is about how her silence on the matter has become son solid that she feels like the memories will all be erased, and then she will have nothing to feel for, but at least if that happens then she wont feel the pain of not being with the loved one who has passed away anymore... | |

| i totally agree with lauraloo except that i think its about losing someone close in that they died. the line "If things get real for me down here.." sort of alluded me to this meaning of the song. i always thought it was a beautiful song but i only just listened to it properly and came up with that idea. and i reckon that it ties in completely with all that lauraloo has said above this. i think the sound of white is a metaphor for someone's spirit. | |

| For me it's about holding onto someone lost, how many things remind you of them - especially the music you shared and enjoyed together. It's a song for people to listen to so they can say when they 'Listen to The Sound Of White' they can remember the memories of their loved one whos passed. It's a very moving song and one most people can relate to because most have lost someone. The question I have is who is it about for Missy Higgins, who is she missing............ | |

| i love this song. it is amazing. i can relate to this song.. in my own way. to me its about my dad. "if things get real for me down here, promise to take me to before you went away - if only for a day. If things get real for me down here, promise to take me back to the tune we played before you went away. And if I listen to, the sound of white, sometimes I hear your smile, and breath your light." it just makes me think about him in heaven and saying that if i get to serious or too caught up then come back and remind me how it used to be.. | |

| when i went to her concert, she said this song was about someone who had died. She didn't say it was her sister though my favourite bit is "I knelt before some strangers face, I'd never have the courage or belief to trust this place, But I dropped my head, 'cos it felt like lead, And I'm sure I felt your fingers through my hair... " She mentioned how she went into a church after it happened and knelt down before a statue of Mary and felt as though she was touched. I found it quite moving when she shared that with us, especially as she admitted she wasn't a religious person | |
