Home M Missy Higgins Nightminds Chords Guitar Tab

Missy Higgins was thrust into the limelight in mid-2001 while still at high school. She
won the Australian Triple J "Unearthed" demo competition and her song "All For Believing"
became one of the station's most requested tracks. Missy soon signed a recording deal
with local label Eleven: a music company (through Virgin/EMI). a live recording she'd
made for Triple J found it's way to Los Angeles tastemaker radio station KCRW and they
started playing it. Many U.S. labels responded to the unique sound of her jazz hued voice
wrapping itself around her emotive lyrics.
NIGHTMINDS — Missy Higgins
(Capo 3rd Fret)
VERSE
C G F C G F
Just lay it all down. Put your face into my neck and let it fall out.
Em
I know
I know
F
I know.
Em F
I knew before you got home.
C G F
This world you're in now,
C G
it doesn't have to be alone,
F
I'll get there somehow, 'cos
Em F
I know I know I know
Em F
when, even springtime feels cold.
CHORUS
C G Am Em
But I will learn to breathe this ugliness you see,
F G C
so we can both be there and we can both share the dark.
C G Am Em
And in our honesty, together we will rise,
F G
out of our nightminds, and into the light
C
at the end of the fight...
VERSE (repeat same chord progression)
You were blessed by a different kind of inner view: it's all magnified.
The highs would make you fly, and the lows make you want to die.
And I was once there, hanging from that very ledge where you are standing.
So I know
I know
I know,
it's easier to let go.
But I will learn to breathe this ugliness you see,
so we can both be there and we can both share the dark.
And in our honesty, together we will rise out of our nightminds
and into the light at the end of the fight.
...and in our honesty, together we will rise out of our nightminds
and into the light... at the end of the fight...

This is one of the best songs on the album. I feel this song is pretty self-explanatory. It deals with the issue of depression and bi-polar disorders. "out of our nightminds, and into the light at the end of the fight...". If anyone else is dealing with depression, they would know that the nights are such a struggle, such a fight. Missy is saying that she can help her loved one out, that it doesn't have to be that way, that they don't have to be alone, and they can fight depression together and see the light at the end of night. Any thoughts?

I love this song. It has helped me because I am dealing with depression right now, and the lyrics really hit home. The words are really powerfull and moving and I wish I had as good of friend as Missy, even thought this song alone has helped me.

i rekon shes saying to another person that she had been there before, shes been to that dark world and she will help that person outta that place. she will learn to breathe the ugliness, like she will learn to understand what the person is goin thru, and therefore come together and understand and overcome. and she knows how to get out of it bcoz shes been standing on that ledge. she can share the dark and make it easier.

This is so so gorgeous... I have friends who have said almost those exact words to me, and I to them. I don't think it's necessarily bipolar, just really emotional intense people who are hit so hard by everything that happens in their lives. I know that when something good happens for me, I'm so overjoyed but my down times are so so down, and it takes its toll. It's just so comforting to know that someone understands and is willing to help pull you up out of the muck and mire you get yourself into.

now that everyone has mentioned that this song is about depression, i actually understood the meaning behind this song. i can relate to these lyrics as my sister has schizophrenia. You were blessed by a different kind of inner view: it's all magnified. ( the voices she hears in her head being magnified, she can hear ppl talk about her.) The highs would make you fly, and the lows make you want to die. (the feeling of ppl betraying her, not liking her or understanding her) i think its great Missy tries to reach out to her loved ones. shes just a great aussie icon :)

mrbaker i agree with your veiw of the meaning of this song, and i thought excactly the same thinkg, and then another thing came to mi mind that maybe it was about somebody going through a drug problem. missy claims she has been there before "on that very ledge where your are now standing" and the highs make u want to fly, an the lows make you want to die, this could relate to the highs and lows. but it could be very true about depression and bi polar, and i relate to this song. its a great song and makes me want to cry, it helps me thru the tought times when i feel nobody is there

You are all so very right. It's not one of those songs that is terribly hard to analyse. It really is one of the best on the album. Its so powerful when she performs it live. Nightminds is fucking brilliant, but i'm inclined to say that The Sound Of White is the best on the album for me, but hey everyone to their own.

i sent my best friend a message with these lyrics, even though we were both at the same place at the time.. but anyways, we both ended up crying over it because its exactly the kind of thing we would say to each other to let us know were both there for each other.. if that makes any sense at all.. and when i listen to this song it makes me cry.. i think its a really sweet song and it reminds me of my best friend.. i dont mean to be all soppy but hey, i think this just might be my favourite song off the album

I saw Missy live a couple of months ago and she dedicated this song to her best freind Lucy, so im inclined to think that it may have been Lucy who was suffering depression, and Missy wrote this song to reach out and help her. Its beautiful and so awesome live.

I love this song... i agree that its about depression and reaching out to someone you love. personally, i link this song also to those suffering anorexia, as it perfectly articulates how i felt as my best friend was hospitalised with the eating disorder... 'i will learn to breathe this ugliness you see' ... its so brilliant.

i really relate with this song, and what i see in it is missy is saying to this person she loves that she would rather be in "the darkness" with them than have to have them face it alone. and of course by the darkness she means depression but thats opretty obvious. i didnt really pay much attentiopn to these lyrics till the other day and they suddenly became clear to me because at the time i was with my boyfriend and he had a down moment.

ok well i think what has already been said is pretty right...it's about saying to someone who's really down "yeah, i've been there, you don't have to be alone" but also about being prepared to help someone even if it means being dragged down yourself...

in my dealing with depression i would frequently listen to this song and cry myself to sleep i think from the sheer beauty of it, not the sadness
