Artist: Modest Mouse
Album: The Moon and Antarctica
Song: Alone Down There

This is a great song.
There are too many layers of guitar to pick through so I did my best.
Its pretty much in the order played of the song, just figure out
how many times to play each part. Remember to strum the chords along
with the rhythm of the song, theyre not all eigth notes.

"The flies, they all gather around me and you too I don't want you to be alone down there" two people, dead/dying flies gathering around... "The Devil's apprentice he gave me some credit He fed me a line and I'll probably regret it" it is a mortal sin to comit suicide... and if he doesnt want you to be alone down there that means two people going to a "hell" i think its two people commiting suicide together.. reminds me of Join Me by HIM in any case its a super depressing song i think

no, mine was wrong, I remember-- its about how you backstab, double-cross, and betray someone, or take them down with you. How you make someone think you like them and share interests with them but in the end, you're a backstabbing bastard and you regret it.

the devil's apprentice is a record agent, this song is about isaac regreting the major label move.

To me, this song has always seemed to imply that god is fallable (flies, they gather 'round me and you too), and subject to human law, though somehow better. I thought it was saying God gets lonely, and that he isn't as high and mighty and powerful as we thought (the devil's apprentice, he gave me some credit, he fed me a line and I'll probly regret it). He's needy and dependant, too. Basically, God was created in our image. He's not much better off than we are.

The creepy feeling of the harmony in the beginning is unmatched. That and the mention of the flies and "down there" should point to death. In my opinion, the first part of the song is being sung by a corpse or ghost of sorts, a friend of the singer who died and is beckoning to the singer. The singer wants to join the deceased because of grief, but he knows he will regret his suicidal tendencies.

To me it seems that he's lost a loved one and he knows that person is in hell... and he doesn't want him to "be alone down there" so he made a pact with the devil to join his friend in hell.... "The Devil's apprentice he gave me some credit/He fed me a line and I'll probably regret it" He know he'll regret being in hell, but he doesn't want his friend to be alone. The beginning in the song is in a trippy tone cause i think he's speaking as the devil... the creepy voice and laugh and the flies gathering... this is what i think is going on

In an interveiw*very rare for Mouse* isaac informed us that He was visited by the devil. I think that this song is about that encounter. the first parts being the devil talking to him about how he is a stupid human who can die and rot*the flies* and "You ask me what size it is not what I sell" pertains to whatever the devil offered him. Isaac like msot humans care about bigger nad better no matter what there being given eve nif it means making a deal with the devil. the rest is pretty self explanitory

Holy shit! I never realized it, but like the first comment says, This song has subconsiously reminded me of Lord Of The Flies for the longest time. Even how Simon (in the book) is kinda schitzo or bipolar, and the main character (i use that term loosely) is schitzo or bipolar it seems like. About the meaning- idk, maybe how we have no one to talk to that can understand us better than our ownselves. Modest Mouse is coming here, to PHX in feb. can't wait!!!
