Head South by Modest Mouse
Tabbed by Jamie Couture residue06@hotmail.com

Intro:
I'm not sure if Isaac does anything more at this part,
but to me it sounds like he only strums two chords while
using his whammy-bar. Listen to the song, and be creative:
"A suuuuuurf rooooock baaaaaand."
C G
Verse:
(Singing and playing this part may be difficult; but with
practice, you can do it. It is possible though, trust me.)
"Struck by being ashamed of your old space..."
e|-------------------------------------------------------------------||
B|------------------------------------------------------------------.||

D|---5-----------------------------5------------------------444--22-.||
A|-7---5--7---6-5-------2--------7---5--7---6-5---------2------------||

"And said, "Of what a drag!" Oh what a backwards scheme..."

* h -> hammer-on - keep first finger on the 7th fret, while tapping the 9th
fret with your third finger. Releasing the third finger will generate the
note back on the 7th fret, which is still held down by the first finger! (
This is for those of you who are unfamiliar with some guitar techniques -
hope you can visualize that one, if you're not confused with my description
:/ )
Chorus:
E (10th) C G
e|------------------------------------------------------------------
B|------------------------------------------------------------------
G|---9---------5-------4-------------------------------------------
D|---9---------5-------5-------------------------------------------
A|---7---------3-------5-------------------------------------------
E|----------------------3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-----------
** The above is a simpler way to play the chorus. If you listen
carefully, you can hear the octave chords.

Proper timing: Play F# for whole bar, then D in the other three:
** A whole bar, in common (4/4) time, has four beats per measure(bar).

***Go nuts during the third part, and have fun with it :)

| yeah this was my favorite song on this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about for a long time. I always thought of it just as mousefan put it. It may be sarcastic but this song has a lot of emotion, when hes screaming "HEAD SOUTH HEAD SOUTH!" Ahh its so awsome | |

| The opening of this song sounds a lot like one of Modest Mouse's earlier songs. | |

| to me this song means being ashamed of who you are so you try to be someone your not then possibly realizing its crappy trying to not be yourself ,by the lyrics----- " And said, "Of what a drag! Oh what a backwards scheme, Cuz here things go from grey To grey and back to grey again And they get green and go to grey And back to grey again" | |

| karma sutured: you might be right, however...since Everclear is from Oregon and all. But Art Alexakis (lead Everclear guy) grew up in LA, so you can't really say they don't have any credibility- well, with their older stuff at least. | |

| I agree with you kingleroythompson. I'm to from Ohio and I know all the whiners.. hell i'm one. What there trieng to say is no matter where you go your going to feel the same way about yourself. plus everyone likes a change of scenery. It makes them feel good.. temporaraly. Untill they get bored of it again and realize that wasn't there problem in the first place. | |

| Listen to the back vocals in the chorus....there's a girl and another guy. The guy is saying the words of time but it still sounds great, thats why i like modest mouse they can make the weirdest things sound great. the begining is also like that....if you heard the same thing but made by someone else it just wouldnt be the same. i mean the chords are sloppy but to the ears it sounds like gold. How can Isaac do this???? | |

| I think it's about changing who you are because you are ashamed of yourself. Isaac is singing in response to this, ridiculing this notion. He wants people to be satisfied with who they are, not change because of what other people think. | |

| Karma: I suck at interpreting songs (which is why I like this site so much), but it's funny, because the first time I heard this song, Everclear popped into my head as well. No idea if that's an accurate interpretation, but still... | |
