PM................

NOTE:In order for this to sound correct one must bend the pitch lower by about a half step
then back to the Gmaj7 pitch. Isaac bends the strings the the back of the bridge on his
red
Whicca guitar. If you dont have suitable bridge to bend or a bar of sorts, then just quickly
slide the Gmaj7 chord down by a fret to the F#maj7 chord and quickly back to the Gmaj7.
If you
know this song, you'll understand what Im talking about. You'll also notice this finger
position
sets you up real nice-like for the verse.

I think, maybe, this song may be a reference to the Odyssey. The 'angel with an ember halo, black hair and the devil's pitchfork' sounds alot like Poseidon, the god who kept pushing Odysseus' vessel off course. Thats the other thing. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is trying to get home, but he just keeps sailing around and around and getting nowhere. Just like the dong implies, we all sometimes seem to be trying hard to get nowhere.

He had a job where he did a lot of driving which is why a lot of his early songs focus on it. He was always driving all over, but never really getting anything accomplished and I geuss he kind of related it to his life in general. Kind of goes in circles when you just succumb to something like that.

People's lives repeat. We basically do the same thing everyday and what's the use really.Where is all this really going?Nowhere and someday death.

The female voice is that of Nicole Johnson, wife of Beat Happening's Calvin Johnson.

I love this song so much, easily my favorite song, better than the new MM stuff in Good News and WWD by far. In my listenings of their music, they seem to have two general kinds of songs: ones that focus on the lyrics and give listeners a new insight into life through Isaac's eyes and ones that focus on the music and tunes, forging the dagger of Modest Mouse that stabs mainstream music in the heart. This song seems to focus a little bit more on the music, especially toward the end, but Isaac didn't leave it without meaning, as this forum has already explained very well. Above all, this is one of the only Modest Mouse songs that I can say truly "rocks", especially towards the end. Check out some videos of MM live playing this song on Youtube, the crowd goes crazy. All in all, the incredible guitarwork, gutbusting drums, and Isaac's unique voice set this song apart, and make me glad I listen to them instead of being some white rap-lover like the rest of America.

I think this song is just all about futility, in that some times, no matter how far you try and drive, you just end up in the same place.

Well, this song intrigues me a lot.. as others of m.m., it has a very melancholic and kind of maniac vibe, but also as somebody up there said, it's beauty, especially when that girl that sings and isaac say "...To pay for gas to drive around, Around the Interstate 8" i guess if i heard that live it would leave me with no breath... and yeah, the meaning i think is about maybe doing always the same shit, i mean fighting with friends, or leaving things pass, things that make you kind of sad, but, maybe like saying, "fuck, i can not do it different"... a sad reflection of when you're fucking things over and over... i hope i had explained well... and greetings Modest mouse fans!
