Night on the Sun
by Modest Mouse, found on the Japanese Tour Ep
tab. by Daniel G
tuning: e g# e g# b e (low to high)
issac plays this song on his danelectro
intro:
the intro riff is pretty easy (not as easy as the verse) but it is a
little tricky at first.
e ------------------------------||------------------------------------
b ------------------------------||------------------------------------
g# ------------------------------||------------------------------------
e ------------------------------||------------------------------------
g# --------2^0---5^6-53-2^3--0--||--5-7-8-75-53-3-3--3-0------------
e --0--4------------------------||------------------------------------
repeat this three times then play this
verse:
the verse is just two sets of harmonics been played in the whole notes.
e ----12---------------------------7----------------------------------
b ----12---------------------------7----------------------------------
g# ----12---------------------------7----------------------------------
e ----12---------------------------7----------------------------------
g# ----12---------------------------7----------------------------------
e ----12---------------------------7----------------------------------
*harmonics *harmonics
make sure to hit all the notes in a quick downstroke, and not rake it,
to get it so sound right.
after like two repetitions of that, start strumming the harmonics to
the rhythm of the song.
solo:
a standard wicked ass issac solo.
(section a)
e -------------------||----------------------------------------------
b --0------0--0--2---||-----4-4-4-4-4/5-54-2-0----------------------
g# ----0--------------||-----------------------------------------------
e ------1------------||---------------------------------------------
g# -------------------||----------------------------------------------
e -------------------||----------------------------------------------
play this twice then play this twice
(section b)
e -------------------||-----------------------------------------------
b --0-2-4-5-4-2-0----||-----5/7-5-4-5-4-0-5/7-5-4-5-4-2-0------
g# -------------------||-----------------------------------------------
e -------------------||-----------------------------------------------
g# -------------------||-----------------------------------------------
e -------------------||-----------------------------------------------
play this twice then play this once (repeat section b a few times)
the last part:
issac is saying stuff like "if there's one thing i know about this town..."
and he plays stuff like this:
e --------------------------------------------------------------------
b ------7-4-----------------------------------------------------------
g# ----------5-3-2-0-2-------------------------------------------------
e --4^7---------------------------------------------------------------
g# --------------------------------------------------------------------
e --------------------------------------------------------------------
he does do variations of this theme, but i think its unessecary to
tab these out. if yer band covers this song, this part should be yours.
the end.

| If he switches between "hopeless" and "hopeful", might he be suggesting that it doesn't matter? And the line "freeze your blood and then stab it into in two/stab your blood into me and blend", I wonder if that's about heroine use. I've never used myself, but blood gets shared, and the opiate in the veins must be like freezing. | |

| Now that i see everyone comparing this song to heroin use... it makes so much sense..... but i just pictured someone with like an iceicle ( i dont know how to spell that) just this spike of ice but blood ice, so frozen blood in this spike like it was dripping off a roof like any icicle and someone just stabbing it into someone haha..... | |

| 100% sure now that it is hopeless...maybe you're thinking of The Weakerthans - Exiles Among You, they say "hopelessly hopeful"... but i doubt anyone would get these bands mixed up | |

| sometimes when you take heroin or a needle drug you get a warm sensation all over your body. its the good rush you get from it all after injection. usually you dont stay awake for very long and you tend to pass out. you may close your eyse as its happening. well i think the words "night on the sun" can prove it a bit. think about it. you've just had a fix or whatever and you're about to go to sleep or youre passing out but you feel incredibly warm all over. i think the sounds of the music make it sound like a trip as well. i mean the lyrics and the sounds behind that make it seem like he's just starting to take the drug or whatever and then the long guitar strings that last a few minutes towards the end really get that feeling like youre dazed going. like you're enjoying your high. maybe thats why so many drug users can say songs sound better on drugs cause maybe they were originally wrote or played on drugs. but wether its he was on a drug during this or not i dont think he couldve possible wrote the song and played it on any sort of needle drunk and still keep it musically sensible and lyrically sensible. i think your mind would drift and forget. remeber he had to have wrote it first, then recorded it, meaning to play it back. so he is musically gifted for sure, and lyrically gifted, wether he really does all he says he does, who knows, maybe he's done drugs then writes about them when he's more sober. i remeber reading he said he did a lot of drugs on the goodnews for people who love bad news interview he had with some magazine and that he definitely felt like it was a bad choice cause he has some fried brain cells now he's sure, but i dont think he's at all that messed up but a lot of his songs can be interpretted with drug use. i think this is one of them for some parts. but im sure he's got other parts of his "life" theories and what not in here too. | |

| while this may or not be about heroin, I get a feeling of hollowness out of it. or like Im getting stabbed in the heart listening to it. like Im grabbing a fistful of a lovers shirt and crying into their shoulder because it wont work out, and it cant be helped (thats alright, thats alright) “night on the sun” meant burning hearts with lack of an emotional outlet to me. the last thoughts of the song seem to also show a redundant outlook on life. however, I dont understand what the lyrics "i eat my own blood and get filled up" mean at all. I cant even try to make something up about what it could mean maybe its about thinking about a love while on heroin? I could believe that. | |

| Just to end this whole hopeful/hopeless argument: Every time he says it, it's definitely hopeless. Hopelessly hopeless. I'm absolutely positive. I'm surprised that anyone even thought it was hopeful, it doesn't sound like it at all. Anyway....This is an amazing song. Some people might complain about it for being long and repeating the lyrics a lot, but in my opinion every repeated line had meaning, and the length just makes it the great song that it is. | |

| "there's one thing to know about this earth we're put here just to make more dirt" What a thought provoking line! I just love people talking about humanity for what it really is, and not making up bullshit about what they wish it was. | |

| The first time it is "hopelessly hopeless". No way it is "hopeful". "Freeze your blood" lines seems to be saying that the cold-hearted nature of someone else is causing other people to become cold-heareted too. And of course, he's saying that "this town" is shit. | |
