You've got the Perfect disguise and you're lookin’ o.k.
From the bottom of the best of the worst, well what can I say
Cuz you cocked your head to shoot me down, down
And I don't give a damn about you or this town no more
No cuz I know the score
Need me to fall down, so you can climb up
Some fool ass ladder, well good luck
I hope, I hope there's something better up there
Cuz you cocked your head to shoot me down, down
And I don't give a damn about you or this town no more
No cuz I know the score
Well good luck believing every word that’s said
I hope you have enough space in your head
I don’t know, broke my back

two things - isn't it "some fool as ladder"? I like it this way better. It's about a man who's recently been dumped. "cocked your head, to shoot me down" Now that the relationship is over, he realizes the woman was just looking for "some fool as ladder". "No, cuz I know the score." also, "I hope there's something better up there" could refer to either the woman finding something better up her ladder, or the man finding something better in heaven.

I always thought this song was about betrayal of some kind. Someone had power over the narrator and they dismissed him rather easily (cock of the head). Could be a woman or close friend. I love it.

to me this song has always represented the business world. i think the ladder represents the corporate ladder and the narrator seems to no longer care... "Need me to fall down, so you can climb up/ Some fool ass ladder, well good luck" and "Well good luck believing every word that’s said I hope you have enough space in your head"

isaac brock makes lovely puns. when i first listened to modest mouse i didnt like them as a band. but then again, i was pretty little, so how could i expect myself to have understood how wonderful they are? i dont like his voice on the bbc version either. it makes the sound take on a dimension that it shouldnt.

Isaac Brock is the most fascinating lyricist I know of and I have a huge crush on him.

Chemical eyes could mean the person is drunk or on some kind of mind-altering drug, or anything contrived for that matter. Looking okay is sizing them up and declaring them trustworthy, another free-spirited substance abuser who just wants to have fun. Then she cocks her head, showing her ugly side that was never expected. I sense some betrayal here. Every word they said may have been the advice of others who want her to lie and cheat, which they probably told her would make her smarter. It sounds like a hierarchical pyramid of shot-calling in a town ravaged by a turf war, one the songwriter was a part of at a time when he thought it was all fun and games until she did something serious to mess him up. He did imply he used to give a damn about the people, the places, the different stories behind the faces, now he can't trust anybody. Or it could be about his mother, who left him in a flooded house because she didn't have enough room in the trailer. Or it could all just be about the rape allegations. I like to think of it as a song of betrayal and bad choices of friends.

i think that this songs about a bad relationship because you cocked you head to shut my head ethier it was done in like a snoby way or a naive way (which i doubt) and he is takig it in an immatture childish kinda way saying well i dont care about you or this town anymore like he is going to leave, or crawl into bed muffle his face into pillows and wait for someone to come make it all better. but idk just my thought
