| Can anybody believe i hated this song at first. I always passed it up skipping through tracks, then not too long ago, I had it stuck in my head and I immediately ran to my computer and learned the tabs. Its now probably my fav modest mouse song. Amazing!! | |

| Yeah this song is definately about Issac getting fucked over. It makes sense if this were about the rape allegations because the "perfect disguise" can be compared to the plantiff's attire and act during the hearing, but the part about not caring about the person or the town tells me that this song is about somebody closer to him who's fucked him over. | |

| I think perfectdisguise has the right idea. When people think of success a picture comes to mind of someone climbing a ladder to be higher than other individuals so they feel better about their insecurities even through manipulation. Knowing they are in a better position people tend to insult or "cock their head to shoot me down" In the song Isaac does not care if someone superficially thinks that their lives are meaningul by being successful because he knows that failures can be a huge downfall when you've worked so hard to achieve something and then in the end it was all for nothing. Its ironic that the final lyrics are "broke my back" What happens when someone falls off a ladder? They could break their back which is a metaphor for falling off a ladder of success because of failure leaving you a broken man. With this said success or having a meaning to life seems foolish when in often results in nothing since we all dies anyways and wind up right back were we started and have to climb the latter again its like a viscious cirlce. | |

| wreckedonyou's interpretation is really intereting and I hadn't thought of it from that angle before, and now the song makes better sense. Also the BBC Radio Session version off of the remastered Moon and Antartica is way better. The only difference in lyrics is "she's got the chemical eyes and you're looking okay" at the beginning. | |

| No, this song's just about some asshole dude who's addicted to fucking everybody over. I know a few of them. That's exactly how they make you feel. After they steal weed from you or whatever, you don't give a fuck about them or anybody who believes anything they say. | |

| No, it is clearly "some fool ass ladder". But you can have it mean whatever you want. I like it better if it is not about a relationship...those kind of songs are tired. That is why I like Modest Mouse so much.. | |

| I think when he says "I hope you find something better up there" he really means it. He is done, doesn't give a damn about you or this town no more and he really does hope that you find something better up there. | |

| This is pure Isaac Brock poetry. This song is about many things. First off, the first five lines are most likely about a girlfriend Isaac has had. The next six lines afterwards are probably business related or still some sort of realationship. The last three lines are, to me, about religion. Isaac is talking to most pious people in the last lines. No matter what its really about its a Modest Mouse classic along the lines of Sleepwalking and Custom Concern. | |

| If you ren't looking at the song related to Isaac's life.. i think it could also be referring to social status... "cocked your head to shoot me down" people will often do anything they can to make sure that they come out on top, and look better then you etc.. as well as "Need me to fall down, so you can climb up Some fool ass ladder, well good luck" The ladder referring to their height of .. "popularity" i guess, it's the only word i can find. And by the person falling down they have the ability to climb higher. Alltogether it's just saying that people will actually stab you in the back to insure their status amongst others, so they can feel better about themselves. When in reality they are hurting people along the way. I really like the line.. "I hope, I hope there's something better up there" it just makes so much sense... what are they looking for up there? | |
