"The View" - Modest Mouse
Tabbed by kyle_gumby@hotmail.com
Standard tuning.
Intro
[The slides aren't really exact.. I think Brock may knock the A string in with
it sometimes. It's loose, so just whack on it. As obscene as that may sound.]

Main Rhythm (00:06)
[This is a little odd; it needs to be played around with quite a bit. There's
quite a bit of scratching and slide improvisation on the lower strings, and he
always treats the Eb ending a little differently every time. Brock also leaves
out the A note of that same chord most of the time, but plays it sometimes..
like the bend I've shown there at the end. So I just put the note in parenthesis
to show that sometimes it's there and sometimes it ain't. You'll need to feel it
out for yourself. Needless to say, you'll have to listen to this bit to get it
right, it's nigh impossible to tab it all out correctly. It's supposed to be fun.
So.. y'know.. have fun with it.]

Lead Part #1 (00:29)
[Played on keyboard, I think? This is it for guitar.]

Chorus Rhythm (00:53)
[Something strange going on here with a whammy pedal of some sort. Which I don't
have. So you're stuck with the basic chords here, following the bass line. If
someone wants to fix this up real nice, please do so.]

|------------------------------------------------------|
|------------------------------------------------------|
Solo (02:19)
[Lead in with the mini solo. On the very last note, you can either bend a B note
up to the C or use a somewhat smoother intonation. The rhythm guitar behind this
part doesn't come in until the second half, and even then it's spotty and very
sporadic. It's based on the main rhythm, however, so just scratch around with that.]

| Read dhelm's review, it answers all. Shouts from both sides, "Well we've got the land but they've got the view!" I always thought that line meant that one side of the argument was saying that they had the land, but the others had the view. Now I think that both sides of this argument are saying that they have the land but the other side has the view... because the grass is always greener on the otherside. Just a little thought. | |

| In my opinion this is the pop'yiest song off MM's most recent album. Being a rather long time fan of MM makes me say "huh" when I listen to this song. It feels mainstream, which isn't to say it isn't good, it's just different for MM. With that being said, I love this song. It's simple and it has a great message. | |

| Great song, rather then say what ill think ill put what Isaac Brock himself said in interview with onion av. "Basically, it's a push-me, pull-me thing. Science finds a way to fuck things up, and then science finds a way to fix it. There's a song on the record that's pretty much about that, "The View." That whole "We're fixed right where we stand" lyric. For every positive thing that we accomplish, something negative comes out of it, and vice versa." Also the drug lines saying at this point that if it takes drugs to make me happy then that works for me. I really like the feel of this song, and the whole positive negative feel to it. life it rents us. | |

| This song is a nice little rendition on the tragedy of the human condition. Humans are master of unleashing consequences they can never foresee. Look at any scientific discovery we've made and look at all the shit that has been unexpectedly wrought from it. With the discovery of the vacinnation of polio, it turns out that some people still get polio after-effects. Nobody expected it and Isaac Brock makes a general case for any scientific discovery that humans have made. It makes sense that an impartial observer (say like an alien from outer space) might make that rationalization. | |

| This song is awesome, the whole album is incredible! Im not so sure what its about but i think its about science and life and stuff. I also think hes talking about all these losers who are angry at mm for going a little more mainstream..."and if it takes shit to make bliss, then i feel pretty blissfully" oh and for anyone who feels that way...screw you and get a life, how can u blame someone for wanting more recognition and stuff....damn just be happy for them | |
