I think that the parts concerning religion, apostles and the angels, represents the corruption of the Catholic church in the 13th century. In case you're not familiar with theology or church history, the Catholic church pretty much went to hell and stopped caring about people's souls and more about selling out to build the bassilica, sex, gambling, alcohol, etc... And the rest is pretty literal and not too hard to interperate

I love this song. It reminds me a lot of Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees". It has the same mellow acoustic sound and pretty much the same meaning

Is there any reason these lyrics aren't inside the cd?

I agree with Technicolor. My favorite part is the "college" part.

i dont understand the lyrics too much but "and it took a long time i came clean with myself i come clean out of love with my lover i still love her loved her more when she used to be sober and i was kinder" is really depressing. this whole song is very depressing. not really the lyrics but the how to song sounds and how he sings.

As sad as it is own hobby of late has been braking down modest mouse lyrics, and poker, but i have got it down pretty good so if there is someone out there looking for what this song is about here you go. it is about how everyone is fake, and as isaac does he uses many metaphors to say this with the apostles, businesser, and the angels, college student. "All the people you knew were the actors" is refeering to your life when think that everybody is the actor because they are all trying to be someone they are not. And the end is true motivation for this song when he realized that he was being fake and changed ending his relationship. I challenge you to tell me how that is not what the song was about.

I think this is just a song about the dangers of putting your trust in anything other than yourself...much like Styrofoam Boots. You live long enough to find out that Santa and the Easter Bunny arent real, and it is all just a ploy for others to make money. Then you learn the real reasons behind Christmas and Easter and you feel cheated again. The quaint traditiond and beliefs that society uses to add meaning and purpose only make the world seem less real or genuine. Of all of the cool lines in this song, the one to really look at is "all the people you knew were the actors" Give that some thought and observation in your own life....by the time you are 30 it will be your own personal motto!
