this song has 2 meanings to me. one is death, simple as that. this whole album seems to be based around a death theme. to me it also means that if modest mouse turns out to be some pop band you see on MTV everyday and hear on the radio and not the amazing indie band that they are, then just bury them with it.

I don't think it's any of that. I think he's telling us(the real indie/MM fans) that just because they're big, mainstream, on the radio, and on MTV that they don't suck. If it comes to the point where they're just another crappy pop band then seriously, bury them with it.

What do yall think "I just don't need none of that Mad Max bullshit" means? I'm aware of the mad max story, but not really seeing how it relates. Oh... and I'm glad that modest mouse is on the radio... can't really be that bad for em... and losing a respect for a band just cause more people like them is just as bad as liking a band because everyone else does... they're still good ol' modest mouse

Does anyone know what Isaac Brock is mumbling beneath the second "We are hummingbirds who've lost the plot and we will not move" section? I think it's great whenever he does that, it kills me every time, it sounds like someone trying to hold onto their sanity. But, still, I want to know what he actually says.

This song is them basically saying sorry to their fans because, Epic, I think. Made them change their sound to make it easier to sell.

One more thing... "We are hummingbirds who've lost the plot and we will not move" is absolutely fantastic as a line. Ask yourself the question... "What are human beings supposed to do?" we have no instruction manual... or plot... and we're afraid to go one way or the other. It's like if someone stuck you in the middle of a soccer game and didn't tell you which goal you were defending and which goal you were attacking. Wouldn't you be afraid to go one way or the other in fear of scoring in the wrong goal? The hummingbirds is how life seems. But that's depressing for me so I just assume the human race is positively evolving... (while we muder the planet, of course). It's not very logical but it's hard to live life feeling like it's pointless. *shrugs*
