| I think that this song is about how one life is no different than any other. A very negative existential point of view. It's important to note that a cockroach is a prehistoric insect that has been around forever just doing the same thing and just won't go away. He's saying that everyone is just "Doin the Cockroach" and just living for years and years never really changing what they're doing. When he says, This one's a doctor This one's a lawyer This one's a cash feed He's expressing that all these people are no different than eachother because life is meaningless and they're all going to end up in the same place. the first line, was in heaven I was in hell Believe in neither But fear them as well This shows that he is unsure of the existence of these but tries to live as if they exist. This is an existential view that further proves that he believes life is meaningless. I could go in more detail about the lyric with the years and the lyric when he says "he's not listenting" but it would basically be rehashing what I've already stated. | |

| ScalewagJim ---- I was in heaven I was in hell Believe in neither But fear them as well This shows that he is unsure of the existence of these but tries to live as if they exist. This is an existential view that further proves that he believes life is meaningless. ---- i think that it shows how unsure he is about death and the meaning of life, and maybe just believes in the already-given shit (heaven, hell) just to have something to believe in.. | |

| I think cockroaches signify how no matter what is attempted it all ends up the same. Cockroaches have been here since pre-historic times and are still here doing the same thing now as they did then, as ScalewagJim said, and they will also continue to after we are gone (Whether we blow ourselves up with nuclear weapons or just die out from lack of recources) and they will live far past that. So I guess you could say mimicking the cockroach could leave you doing the same thing forever never changing, kind of like a escape defense mechanism: If you never face the obstacle, there's no way you can fail so you don't need to fear failure. A cockroach is immune to radiation which is one of the major denominators in the extiction of the human race. So "Doin' the Cockroach" you are immune to failure (Radiation) by avoiding any obstacles that come your way. Unfortunately this would bar you from ever trying anything so you would just be the same for your entire lifetime, just like a cockroach. Okay I guess that's it! I'm probably way off, but oh well it's what I think XD | |

| I agree with ScalewagJim and Buttonz. Seems to me that the meaninglessness of life is a major theme in many Modest Mouse songs...and I love that. I think the philosophy they're closest to is the existentialism of Camus. | |

| "One year Twenty years Forty years Fifty years Down the road in your life You'll look in the mirror And say, "My parents are still alive." Does it seem to anyone else that this would have been much more of a powerful part of the song if he said "My parents aren't still alive" instead of "My parents are still alive". I never understood why he sang the former. | |
