| it's about his views on religion and religious-minded people. "I hear voices insinuating..." refers to people believing god has spoken to them. it doesn't exist, quit believing in it. | |

| Don't stop listening. It'll help you think. But don't stop beleiving in god if that's what you really want. But in the songs religiously speaking, just listen to what he says, and you can either agree or disagree with what he says. This song is like a bad acid trip. You know when you'd start to hallucinate and stuff? And forgetting? Well I kinda think that's what the song's like. But I don't know..... It's weird. Modest Mouse is so anti-drug now but was so pro-drugs only a few years ago. It's hard to figure out what's what with them drug-wise. | |

| I've always found this song to be about the "morning after" or "crash" of some drug or alcohol trip. Not so much as a form of love or relationship song. Due to its complete stream of consciousness presentation of the lyrics I’ve always considered this one of the more amusing and better songs on Long Drive. It really seems plausible that Brock could have written this song on some morning in September after one such come down. Getting back, this song is actually quite funny; it starts out wit him looking at a picture of him and someone else and it seems familiar to him. But as he gets to thinking about it more and his mind sorts out the previous events he finds that he can’t even remember the event associated with the picture and even the picture at all. This is actually amusing because it is a common occurrence. If anybody’s ever been to some form of party or something and brought a camera while on a mind-altering substance. It isn’t too implausible to develop the pictures a week later and realize that some person in a number of photos can’t even be remembered. Its funny how many times I’ve woken up with people’s numbers in my phone whom I still can’t remember. Also, the instrumentals on this are awesome! | |

| i think the heavy breathing in the background of the song is a good clue as to what this is about. he hears voices, he seems to recall this person that does not even exist. (alternatively, he is looking at a picture of himself from a long time ago). I think message is that the singer is insane. He is hyperventilating, having a nervous breakdown. And for him, the exit does not exist, there is no way to break out of this cycle of insanity that he is enveloped in. He is recalling how things used to be, realized that the person in the picture no longer exists as he has transformed into someone else, and he breaks down. Also as the song goes on the music becomes more and more chaotic and disorderly. This song is really, really great and is probably one of my favorites as it's something I can relate to about now. | |

| I change my mind, I Think this song is about him trying to find a way out of life but he can't because you live for eternity in heaven or hell so he turns to drugs/alcohol for the answers and... the results are rather weird... | |

| Obviously he is both on grugs and writing about them. They don't remeber the picture, they are looking for an exit. He also lets us know he is writng while taking something "I hear voices insinuating Feeds me lyrics to this song that I am saying" And sunlight afetr they wake up, and high, and can't remember anything, no way out... its very irritating to someone on drugs... get it? | |

| The end sounds tripped out to me. But the "Exist does not exist" lines COULD (a stretch probably) be referring to inability to escape existence. In Christian sense... go to heaven or hell for ETERNITY and in Hindu world, you're stuck in samsara (cycle of death and rebirth). There's no way out! | |

| "Does not Exist, Take an Exit I hear voices insinuating Feeds me lyrics to this song that I am saying" i think isaac is thinking about a relationship he wants to put out of his mind, but cant. "Sunlight 7:20 PM, early September Standing looking at a photograph That you do not remember being taken" this chick may have dumped him, and has moved on, so much so that she doesnt even remember him. "You look out of breath, and me like I am faking As a matter of fact I don't recall this photo being taken You don't even actually exist so I just started shaking Does not exist, take an exit" so he's lookin at this pic of himself and this chick and just decides, if you forgot about me i will forget about you, but an exit does not exist, he cant escape his thoughts. | |

| "You don't even actually exist so I just started shaking" When I used to use dramamine recrationally I used to see people that I thought were there and were real but then I'd realize I was home alone then I'd freak out. On my worst trip I ended up in the ER and remember almost NOTHING from that night, but apparently I thought my I.V. was a pez dispenser and tried to get candy out of it, nearly ripped it out. I'm told I needed the nurse to help me piss too. | |

| I agree he has a nervous breakdown/Hyperventilating. The rest is debateable. == It could be a religious theme/schizophrenic (hears voices that do not exist, etc). But I don't really think so. == I think he having an identity/drug crisis. He doesn't even know who he is anymore. Something -- possible drugs -- has changed him substantially. He feels he will never be able to go back to the way things were. Sunlight 7:20PM (and possible Early September) are contradictions and nothing is making sense. I think he wants to get away from the chaos (take an exit) but he believes he is beyond repair. There is definitely an underlying desire of something he wants in the song, but its ambigious (to understand himself, a love, lifes meaning, etc) but there is a sense of desperation that it will never happen. | |

| I agree with storm&stress that picture he's looking at is of himself. I see a drug addict that feels hes trapped and will always be a slave to this drug, therefore and exit does not exist. In the photo the person who looks out of breath is his sober side who's exausted by whatever substance he craves. The person faking is the addict side whos pretending to be clean and healthy. This person realizes who he's looking at in the picture isnt who he's become, that he doesnt exist. This cause him to have a breakdown and start shaking. | |

| I think he's telling himself the person does not exist, and then "taking an exit" by finding some sort of out. Drugs would be the obvious choice. It took me some getting used to, but the music is fun. The intro is great. Their solid drum rythms are incredible. | |

| I think that this song is about a bad acid trip. The whole thing with voices, the heavy breathing, staring at pictures, and definitely with "exit does not exist" since, when tripping, you often want it to stop but you can't stop it, which is when you really to start to freak out. | |
