| I think a big part of the song is pointing out the huge difference between Yaweh (Old Testament God) and his son, Jesus. Yaweh was an angry, vengeful, and jealous God while Jesus was a forgiving and loving son. In the song, Jesus is just being happy and drinking from a well and this just pisses off his dad, who "should have killed that little fucker before he even had." B/c if you think about it... Jesus didn't wanna get crucified. But God MADE HIM (remember the prayer in the garden before Jesus was arrested). Hooray for Modest Mouse! | |

| Its comparing God and Jesus to a father and son specifically a teenage son. should have esured that planet before it crashed, kind of like a car crash that a kid would get into. He kind of makes fun of a bad father who wishes his son was aborted. Im guessing Penny is the mother and she learned not to trust the father. Its kinda like he is poking fun at the whole idea of God in general. | |

| I don't think this song has anything to do with Jesus, seriously. I think if anything is just mocking religion. I like it. I like it a lot. =) | |

| this song depicts the demise of religion in a purely technological society. What's the point of religion if people are too busy trying to get rich quick and shit like that. It's a really clever song if you get the lyrics. | |

| I always think of the line "should of killed that little fucker before he even had (em')" I think about, what if Jesus died after birth or mary aborted him or some weird shit, idk where this is goin. To think too much into this song, Isaac was still doin coke and acid at his point in his career. | |

| the psychology of being an only child tells a lot about this song. An only child doesn't have brothers or sisters to devide a parents time. That means that an only child will be the most important thing in the parents lives. However this makes the child seem self important and gives them a desire to be at the center of attention. I guess creating a religion and claiming you are God counts as being despirate for attention. | |

| God didnt MAKE Jesus. think about it. all of the angels were at Jesus' command so when he was on the cross he could have called all of the angels down to save him. i thikn they were talking about his father on earth, joseph. he was angry cuz mary told him he she was pregnant. and i thikn he got jealous. | |

| I agree with AmyLizK about the whole meaning of the song. I also think that it is Joseph (not God) getting mad at Jesus because in those times Jesus was looked at by alot of people to be a freak, "he went to the river drank and he drank and he smiled." Its impossible for Joseph to understand his son, who seems to not have a care in the world, so thats where the friction comes from. Its also interesting to note that Joseph is not mentioned very much in the new testament, it almost seems like he was not around. Maybe he was not happy about Jesus claiming to be the son of God | |
