i love this song stef had it right but something needs to be said about the music. the end of the song is some of the most BEAUTIFUL music i have ever heard. truly. it sounds like finding a car crash in the early morning in the grey fog when its run off the road into dark pine trees and brush and how it looks at 6 am with the tired cops and firefighters and you know the person died. as setf said its about emptyness and the part with the lyrics is is rushy catchy but then goes into this long sad empty stretch as if reflecting on the loneliness of what happened and that strange detached feeling.

The second verse is clearly referencing heroin use. The "sylabble lisp" is just the resultant slurred speech. "The twist" isn't a commonly used term for heroin, but it was used by Kurt Cobain in the song "Aneurysm" : "Come on over and do the twist / Come on over and shoot the shit / Love you so much you make me sick." Porcupine refers to the needle.

JinxedCheat- That's a reprise of the song "Heart Cooks Brain," which appears earlier on the album Lonesome Crowded West. It's always been one of my favorite parts, when he reprises that little bit.

I'm on the road to god don't know My brain's the burger and my heart's the charcoal.....Isn't that the main line in the Matador 10th Annaversary song Heart Cooks Brain? Maybe that song was derived from this one.

First of all im a huge modest mouse fan!!!! they are my favorite band! I have no favorite song by them..i love them all!! I believe they are underrated and their songs sould be played on the radio!! Second of all i dont know if anyone else has noticed that they use the same words or meanings in other songs they play. For example, Issac talks about high school a lot in many different songs of his. The title of this song is almost the same title to another song...for another example. I just think thats interesting in that he is trying to prove his point in different songs so that the listener doesnt forget about that point. Finally, im not sure what this song means. in fact im not quite sure if anyone knows 100% what Issac is trying to say in his songs. only the band does. Maybe its his way of expressing his feelings..whether he wants us to figure them out or not. just as long as he knows someone is listening. but im just guessing

the first couple of lyrics remind me of the movie memento too. Which is about a guy that has no short time memory so he tattoos important facts on his arm. These facts lead him to the end of the movie (or if you've seen it, the beggining) which is disaster. I know that this song has nothing to do with memento or donnie darko, and most likely everything with what stefanjoe said. Love this song by the way.

He thought he read minds and was not right this guy thinks he has ESP but he really doesn't That line still made him seem charming when he says things like "i can read minds," people find it endearing, even if it's bullshit.

"We thought you were smokin'!"

also worth noting, small bags of heroin tied with a twist tie are refered to as twists.

DUMBASS Thomas Oct 10, 2006 at 2:57 AM PST

the girl in the song i obviously quite dumb -"syllable lisp"- and she's the only one who thinks this guy's decent. The twist is the "photographer"'s impending control over her.

THe other lounge off of Lonesome crowded west is similar to this. THey both are like 8 minutes and are instrumental for the last 4 minutes

jordan roberts Oct 10, 2006 at 4:11 PM PST

i think this song has to do with heroin but maybe doing it with a girl? maybe the heroin is the girl? maybe the last song referring to heart cooks brain makes the whole song have to do with dying or feeling like dying. maybe thats the clever name for the song. lounge, its closing time. who knows.

GRIM Oct 11, 2006 at 8:28 AM PST

nice reference to donnie darko, but this album was made a few years before donnie darko. id agree with stef, its about two young physical specimens just looking for a "good time" and the good time just adds to how their empty "clubbin'" life as its drawn on every day.

Secondhand Smoka Oct 12, 2006 at 10:16 PM PST

I think this song is about a girl whose boyfriend is getting her high on heroin ("they all went down and did the porcupine") then films her in porn videos ("They went down to the dance and grind "). She hasn't told anyone about it, yet ("And everybody she knew was gonna get the twist") The lines "I've got a girlfriend out of the city" and "I know I like her, I think she is pretty" could be written from the perspective of the girl's boyfriend who lives away from the city and doesn't know she's having an affair with the pornographer and could be there to convey that in modern times, even those closest to you know nothing about you. At the end of the song, the girl is very depressed, and doesn't know what to do ("I'm on the road to god don't know / My brain's the burger and my heart's the charcoal") and is either leaving a bar or is going to kill herself, possibly both ("It's closing time")

Yeah, Modest Mouse reprises stuff in other albums too. In Good news they mention Float On a couple in the World At Large and he also mentions about how he likes books about drifters and later on theres a song titled "Bukowski" who wrote books like that. I think there's something like that in Long Drive too, but I forget what it is now.
