OCEAN BREATHES SALTY - Modest Mouse
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tabbed by: devin miller
Email: irish__nugget@hotmail.com
Tuning: Standard EADGBe
Guitar 1 and 2 (in time)
e|----------------------------------------------------------|
B|---------------------------------------------------0------|
G|------------0-------0---0--------------0-------0-------0--|
D|----5-4---4---4----------------5-4---4---4----------------|
A|--7-----5-------0-3---3------7-----5-------0-3---3--------|
E|----------------------------------------------------------|
e|----------------------------------------------------------|
B|--12+~(0.5)------------------12+~12+~(0.5)----------------|
G|------------12+br(0.75)-------------------12+br(0.75)-----|
D|----------------------------------------------------------|
A|----------------------------------------------------------|
E|----------------------------------------------------------|
the ~(0.5) isn't just a vibrato. use the bar to bend like this:
b-r-b-r-b-r-b-r
by br(0.75) i mean: bend up to almost fret 14, then release.
listen to the song to get the right pitch.
when isaac plays this live, he hits harmonics on the 12th
fret then presses on the bridge to bend them. But I guess normal
fretted notes would sound as good.
riff played four times throughout the song by guitar 2:
e|-----------------------------------------------|
B|--8\5-8\5-8---8-8-10\5--5-5\3--3-3-3-3-5-------|
G|------------9----------------------------5-5---|
D|-----------------------------------------------|
A|-----------------------------------------------|
E|-----------------------------------------------|
This is the quiet background riff played by guitar 2 starting at 1:40.
note: this ho/po is very quick

Right at the end of the previous riff guitar 1 plays this:

i think this song questions all of existance. i also think that the song also says that from what we know about life right now, why should should we waste our lifes for an after life. DO we even know if there is an afterlife?

I also saw the video. I also believe that the boy's father died, but I interpret the video differently: The boy is lonely, with no friends or neigbors, since he lives in a rural area. He tries to play with the srarecrow, the closest thing he can find to a companion, but he just knocks the inanimate scarecrow onto the ground. With the scarecrow fallen, crows start to return, including an injured crow played by the lead singer (note the costume). The boy nurses tries to nurse him back to health, putting him in a shoebox and showing him to his mother, who is disgusted by the sick bird and tries to make him get rid of it. He runs back to the cornfield and goes to sleep. IN the morning he wakes up to find the crow alive and well, and they gleefully play with each other. He wakes up and realizews this was a dream, and sees that the crow has died, despite his efforts. he bries the crow, at which point the ghost of the crow starts to sing, along with the rest of the band, who are really other animals the boy kept as pets.

I finally know the exact definition of this song, after watching the music video where the little kid goes around the countryside on his bike it is stating that no matter how much you guys want to deny it is about a loved one, but can be interpretted in two different ways. I think when he goes out to pitch to the scarecrow that is his father (lost loved one) and when he finds that man in the sunflower field (his father) he brings him home in a box and his mother yells at him and the little boy gets mad and runs away. He then opens the box and dies, and wakes up in a ruleless world where it is his job to have fun. But i kind of feel bad cause i thought this song had more meaning. His father was the anti-religious, telling his mother that there is no such thing as god or an afterlife but when his mother realized he was still alive she remember all the bad times and yelled at the kid for bringing him home, so in a way the kid committed suicide to join his father and i am pretty damn sure that this is the meaning.

This song has nothing to do with a girl, the "Get away from me" may make it seem like that but it is Modest Mouse expressing their feelings about Life/Death. "For your sake I hope heaven and hell.... are really there but i wouldn't hold my breath" That is stating that the religious are wasting their times and if the afterlife isn't like what they thought it was it was basically nought. "You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?" is stating that the religious basically wasted life praying to gods that did not exist, it is like a kick in the pants for those who's entire lives were spent praying to nothing but air.

I think the reason bands use authors or book titles is because they want people to say "hey, I want to check that out." It's like, at shows, the musician's display their political views. Sure, I'm a sheep, and I'll read a book if my favorite musicians mention it. I'd be objective about it, but yeah, I like them, why wouldn't I support their interests?
