Why does everything have to be a breakup song, you emo bastards? I don't think yall get stawned enough- then the true meaning of Spitting Venom pops right up... You know how people will listen to modest mouse and feel like they know a million different ways to explain how life sucks, you know, just like Brock does. Well anyway, Brock is trying to clarify that his pessimistic philosophies he speaks, or, if you will, the venom he spits should not be taken as the gospel most of his fans (including myself) consider it to be. There's an antidote to it all... just drop it... let it all fall off.

Also while I'm at it I think this song is about a breakup with a bitter person but that hasn't brought Brock down instead hes taking good from it.

To me, the end "cheer up, baby" part seems to be in a dream-like kind of state. It makes me think of the ending of the film Science of Sleep, for some reason.

The music is great...but am I actually a bit disappointed in the lyric quality of this song. I cant help but feel that modest mouse can do better. Cheer up baby it wasnt always quite so bad for every venom that came out the antidote was had? Come on this is not vintage mouse.

i could be completely wrong but i first interpreted "cheer up baby it wasn't always quite so bad for every bit of venom that came out the antidote was had" as that the further you progress in life, relationships and whatnot things tend to get more complicated as they go on and "venom" in the beginning had an antidote, but as time goes on certain problems arent laid to rest and just get more complex

Does anyone else think that the last part of the song is very similar to Little Motel? Maybe the two are thematically connected.

to all who think this is a break-up song: You're absolutely wrong and absolutely right at the same time. Isaac doesn't write "love songs" or "break-up songs" in the traditional sense. He may use a relationship as an image for a song, as a narrative point, but there's usually a deeper point to be made. Here, I believe the break-up ties into the theme of the album. The album is about a boat ride gone awry or, perhaps, Modest Mouse's career. This "break-up" song would then be written to the fans who bitterly "dumped" Modest Mouse, so to speak, upon the release of GOOD NEWS. "I don't know who kept track. I didn't know there was a score but it looks like your the winner. I ain't gonna play no more. It's over. Game over. "Well we walked real stiff and our canes tapped the ground. You hit me with yours and said, "You're gonna stare me down." It's over. It's over. You can say what you want but don't act like you care. It takes more than one person to decide whats fair. Its over. Think it over."

Hmmmm not really you were talking soda pop is referencing that you sweeten up the truth but never say what you feel just what people want to hear. For example someone is fat and they ask you if they are fat if you say no you are talking soda pop.

i dont think the lyrics this cd are AS outstanding as could be, needless to say they are still preety good. i know a person who fits into this song so well, seems to have an opnion about everyting, and generally not a friends opnion. Has problems with everything and shares them, even if you care or dont. thats how i see this song anyway. let it drop seem liek 3 simple words these sorta people should consider.

isaac brock is different "well you were talking soda pop you were talking quite a lot the opinions that I do not give the opinions I aint got so let it drop" i think this is talking about how people argue about stupid shit like if soda pop is called soda or pop. and how most people dont even have an opinion and make it up on the spot just to have an argument

I am not a fan of modest mouse. I've tried many times to get into them, and the vocals just do it for me. That being said, This isn't just the best song on the album, but the best song I've heard so far this year. I absolutely love it. Only thing that sucks is that eight and a half minutes isn't long enough.

yeah i think most of the songs are linked to the album's title "we were dead before the ship even sank"....which in my opinion can be interpretted as "our relationship was dead before we officially called it off". However in both songs (spiting venom and little motel) there were moments in the relationship that were good. it was definitely a loving relationship despite the "venom". Unfortunately the ship didnt make it through the storm. and one more thing.... i think it might be.... "cheer up baby it wasn't always quite so bad for every BIT OF VENOM that came out the antidote was had."

also the singer thinks that the girl should just drop all her opinions even if she's right, whats she's saying is only making things worst. So, she should stop saying the things

I actually think the last line might be cheer up baby it always wasn't quite so bad for every venom then that came out the antidote was half and not had, which changes the connotation of the song quite a bit.

this song is about a girl who only says negative things to her friends and is breaking up with the singer, the singer is still in love with the girl and feels it is unfair that the girl is breaking up with him

Yeah tenserock, my impression is that Issac is actually, well, a little happy. I heard somewhere he even stopped drinking (what!?!?). Its crazy but they've been at this game like 10 years and they have always been about not putting out the same album over and over, look at "This is a Long drive for someone with nothing to think about" compared to "Moon and Antartica" to "Good News for People who Love bad News". Very different each time and damnit that might make me a Modest Mouse fanboy but so be it :D Also on a side note does anyone know where this verse first appeared in a modest mouse song: well you were talking soda pop you were talking quite a lot the opinions that I do not give the opinions I aint got I'll never understand why they didn't put that song on an LP.Edited by Mellow_Harsher on September 1 2007, at 06:04PM
