its about one of those relationships that should have ended long ago, but you kept it going. those relationships where you can't stand each other anymore and the only thing good in the whole deal, was the sex in the first place. now its over, and was all probably just a waist of time. now he's just ..broke

The singer is talking about how he has broken so many things nothing really means anything to him anymore, hence the conversations without the topic. Sweet song. Best part is the last verse. I love the way it speeds up and Isaac says it all hurriedly.

I’m stunned at the genius lyrics... The song speaks for itself. It's like an intricate piece of art. Mouse kicks so much ass. I get to see them in concert in a few weeks.

This is probably my favorite modest mouse song, but it always bugged me that I don't know what Isaac is saying in one line (its listed here as "It was like everything was evidence of broken (time?)" which is way wrong) anyway I have 3 versions of the song, the one on building nothing, the one on baron von bullshit, and the demo tape version. In the first version the words go "It looked like everything (well/when) everything had ___ ___" the second version he says "it looks like everything like everyone (had/can) ___ ___" the third one is hard to hear but sounds like "It was a stupid (tiny/time a) stupid tiny ___ ___" the last two words/syllables are the same in all three, but I can't think of anything that sounds like what hes sayin in all three. I used to think it was "broke down" but in the second two it sounds different, more like "go slow" I really need the lyrics to this song...

In my opinion...i'm not honestly sure what this song could be about. But what i can say is what it means to me: for one i know that the membners of modest mouse have in their past used methamphentamines....and other drugs sooo.... the lines: "Broke account so I broke a sweat I've bought some things that I sort of regret about now" says to me he spent a ungodly amount of money on drugs and other things....and now that he looks back upon it and his views have changed, he regrets all of it. the lines: "Broke your glasses, but it broke the ice You said that I was an asshole and I paid the price" - well i have no earthly idea but i think of a glass pipe breaking...when possibly trying to smoke the ice. The pipe broke but worstly it wasted the ice (dope/meth/ect) his friend is mad, call s him an asshole. - but i'm not saying thats correct...just what i think of when i hear it. the lines: "Broken hearts want broken necks I've done some things that I want to forget but I can't Broke my pace and ran out of time Sometimes I'm so full of shit that it should be a crime Broke a promise cause my car broke down Such a classic excuse it should be bronze by now" say to me this - all of the shit that the drugs caused have broken alot of friendships, broken hearts, and theres a point of no return. The point of realazation. He wishes he had not done these things but he did and has to accept. He broke promises, and made excuses.... the part - "Sometimes I'm so full of shit that it should be a crime Broke a promise cause my car broke down Such a classic excuse it should be bronze by now" - says that he constantly used that as an excuse possible...or just thwe fact that its a cliche excuse and the fact that he was lieing so much at that time and hurting others feelings as a metaphor. the lines: "Broke up, and I'm relieved somehow It's the end of the discussions that just go round and round And round, and round, and round, and round, And round, and round it shouldn't have been anyway" - talk of all of the drauma being over. the addiction in my eyes. (like i said thats how i see it) and the lines: "You're living on fancy wine You'll drink that turpentine You're starting conversations You don't even know the topic " - mean your living of that fancy wine (your addiction?) you'll drink that turpentine (that poison) you'r starting conversations you dont even know the topic (your talking but dont know what the hell about. your mouth just keeps running and all your syaing is bullshit.) - maybe on somthing.

The song explains itself...not a whole lot of hidden meaning. The lyrics themselves are beautiful as usual. This song and the MM song "Lives" go together on mix tapes well Best lyric: "Broken hearts want broken necks" Damn thats good!
