Moldy Peaches Biography

The Moldy Peaches is a self-proclaimed anti-folk group, consisting of, essentially, Adam Green and Kimya Dawson, with the addition of bassist Steve Mertens, drummer Strictly Beats, and guitarists Jack Dishel and Toby Goodshank. Green and Dawson met at Exile on Main Street Records in Mount Kisco, New York, and began working together afterwards. In the late 1990s, the group was part of the New York City underground scene, partially due to the band's strange costumes, reminiscent of The Frogs. Touring along with bands such as The Strokes and Tenacious D, The Moldy Peaches have released two albums with Sanctuary Records.

The Moldy Peaches song lyrics are often humorously vulgar or explicit, and deal with a panoply of issues in a deadpan yet over-the-top style that leaves you with such lines as, "Who mistook the steak for chicken?/Who'm I gonna stick my dick in?" in a song that is, arguably, about the loss of innocence and the desire for escape. Equally lauded and criticized for the explicit nature of their lyrics, as well as the low-key, lo-fi style of recording, The Moldy Peaches found an audience in young indie listeners who appreciated the frank manner and outrageous style with which the pair delivered their songs. Since their single major release, the band has dissolved with both central members pursuing solo careers (Green to tepid commercial recognition, and Dawson to rapt underground/anti-folk fans), but female lead Dawson has claimed that the Moldy Peaches project is only inactive, not dead.
