kfe2, it was originally "Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)" as the entire album was an orchestral "opera" of epic proportion surrounding time itself -- 'The Day Begins', 'Twilight Time' 'Late Lament' (and 'Nights in White Satin' was a part of this) -- going from the dawn to the nighttime. It's a lovely album and definitely worth picking up. Widely available on CD everywhere, though the concert version at Red Rocks in the latter 80's with the London Philharmonic is exceptional. It is definitely about childhood memories; the wonders of what lies beyond the mundane, imagining, and daydreaming. Tuesday is not Monday, nor is it Friday, and not much has really been attributed to Tuesday. (Arthur Dent could never get the hang of Thursdays, but managed Tuesdays just fine, for all we know.) Overall a lighthearted piece with a definite touch of magic. Mystery, not of the dangerous kind, but more of the stuff of Wonderland, Oz, Narnia, Hogwarts and other realms where harmless curiosity rules and imagination runs unbridled and free.

This song was inspired by Justin Hayward's childhood memories in Lydiard Park in Swindon, England.

This is just one of those songs thats just puts you in a good mood. I highly suggest anybody pick up the whole album because its just awesome. @kfe2: Mostly likely because this is the single version of the song. The album version is much longer then the single is. I think its the same reason why Nights in White Satin is not The Night: Nights in White Satin

OK, so others have claimed this is about JH's childhood memories. I like that! However, for me, this song has a HUGE connection with pot, weed, maryjane, reefer - having listened to this tune frequently back in the day. It really works for someone in an altered state. The whole trip outside of your body, the self reflective nature of pot, the views of ordinary yet beautiful life, etc. It all enhances the experience tenfold. this is a brilliant song, including lyrics, music and arrangement.
