Does anyone know what is said in between the words "Los Angeles" at the very beginning of the track and "You have never been in love..."? It sounds a bit like somone saying "You are the Quarry" to me but I don't think that's it.

hmm clark..that definitely an original interpretation...personally...I think it's more literal...poor Hector with a "bullet in hs gullet"...I like the bit "the first last lad". Winner song.

Who is Hector when he's at home...is there a real story to this song? Have to say this song bloody rocks, and would be great to find out if there is a story behind it.

I love this song. I think this morrissey's ironic twist on marriage. Hector was the first to the gang to "die" or in other words tie the not. That's my perspective.

It actually goes: "We are the pretty, petty thieves" and not "Pretty, pretty"

Hurray ! for manchester's own steven morrissey , oh sorry just morrissey . I believe this song is strongly about dramatic irony. Hector being the central part of the story is a man who has never been in love even in the most dire situations . Therefore the mozzer's love affair with life and death . Hector being apart of a brutal gang and being the first to die , shows this songs dark nature about failing , then being admired after death . " he stole all hearts way".

I totally agree with Clark`s interpretation. "You have never been in love, Until you've seen sunlight thrown over smashed human bones" Death is an alegory for marriage. Indeed, marriage is death of passion, death of emotion, death of individuality. The image of smashed human bone inspires fear and disgust, just like the thought of marriage does. But when you are able to see beauty in this horrendous picture ("you've seen the sunlight thrown"), you know you are really in love. Gorgeous song.

This song is so awsome, and yes, hector is a fictional character, but this song does reflect the life of street theives.
